I am going to do some baby backs tomorrow. I prefer to light my fires with Weber's starting cubes.
How many cubes will I need with the 18.5? I have been smoking indirect on my ranch kettle and use
2 or 3 cube to get my charcoal snake lit.
So I've never used the starter cubes, but as long as you're using a chimney I think you'll only need one cube.
I would also suggest not bothering with the snake method on your WSM. While the snake works great for extending times between refuels on kettles, the WSM is already designed to so that you won't need to refuel for hours, making the snake kinda pointless on a WSM. I too have an 18" WSM and have only used the Minion or standard method. As pointed out here, http://virtualweberbullet.com/fireup1.html, the standard method is good for short high heat cooks and the Minion method is good for longer low & slow cooks.
