CI Grates for a Performer

I am about ready to pull the trigger and buy the cast iron grates for my Performer but I have one concern. I fire up my coals using a chimney on the center of the coal grate and the propane start. Will I be able to continue to start my coals this way without removing the entire grate? The cross section looks like it goes directly over the center of the grill which would prevent me from lighting my coals this way with the grate holders on. Is it a pain to remove the entire grate? Will I be able to light my coals with the chimney by just removing a section?

You're either going to lift out the whole CI assembly or fire up the chimney another way, outside of the kettle.

Or you're going to stop using the chimney or not buy the CI grate system.

Sorry, but I can tell you aren't sneaking a chimney in 1/4 of a pie of the Kettle.

I feel your pain, it would have been nice for the CI grate folks to make halves instead of quarters.

I have been using a CI grill grate for about 6 months or so. I take mine out to light my charcoal or heatbeads in the Chimney. It depends on what I am cooking as to where and how I place the fire. I then put the CI grate or the standard grate on. (I use the standard grate for indirect so I get less heat transfer and don'tget sear marks on the food.
The CI grate is fantastic, the removable segments make it so versatile, you will be amazed.

Cheers

You'll get use to it and after your first few cooks, you'll never bat another eye about it

I've been using the Lodge Logic Cast Iron grate that sits on top of the standard grate for when I want sear marks on my food. It works great and I can remove it easily when I don't need to use it.

Here it is using Chris's Amazon link in case you want to buy.
Lodge Logic CI Grate

I got mine for $30 about 2 years ago, but it is still worth it at $50.

Thanks for the link to the grill grate. I think I'm going to try that for now. I don't think I can do without the convenience of lighting my chimney with my Performer. I think I'll go with the grate that sits on top now and look for a kettle to use the Craycort CI grates. It will be a good excuse to get another grill!

I light my chimney as you do, so I sold my CIGs .... as an aside, I bought a Q 100 for the RV, man that little rascal will sear steaks & veggies, etc soooo ... for super quickie meals we use it a lot

Hi Chuck,

Hope I'm not speaking out of line here, but rather than use your chimney for the initial start, pour onto the coal grate the amount of charcoal you need,in the middle and use the gas lighting system on the Performer, it might take a little longer to do this way but at least you won't need to juggle a hot CI grate.
If you need to replenish coals, I suppose you could just remove some of the qtr peices and you should have enough room to manouvre lit coals towards centre.
I don't have one of these grills myself but I often just pour coals in the middle and hit gas lighter...while I'm waiting for the coals to be ready, I'm inside prepping all the goodies for the grillin'
I love the performer...it's correctly named!!

Cheers
