You use a chimney of Kingsford to grill a couple of rib eyes--total grilling time of 6/8 minutes, then close the vents and smother the fire. What do you do with used charcoal?

I agree I hardly ever just do a couple a steaks . But if I was going to I would just use about a 1/2 load !

I normaly just shut the cooker down save what left over clean out the ash next cook and pile my next load on top of whats left over !

I like to light about 1/2 chimney because it gets going so fast. The lit coals get poured on top of the used coals from previous cooks and some fresh unlit. I always make a bigger fire than I think I will need. To me, I just really hate wishing my fire was hotter or burning longer.

I've been putting about half chimney fresh, then using a scoop to top it off with the leftover used charcoal. I guess just pouring a half chimney of burning new charcoal over the burned out charcoal will work just as well and save some time? I'll try that and see if I get as nice a heat source next time. Thanks for the tip!

I usually just add fresh lump charcoal (1/2 chimney) over the charred remains of what is left. Just be sure to use your tongs to move the left over lump around to get off excessive ash..

Another great tip I got here was to use a second charcoal grate to keep smaller pieces of lump from falling through.
