Charcoal vs. Lump Hardwood


 
Tim, some brands of lump are denser which makes lighting with newspaper harder. The starter cubes will work, or a wad of paper towels sprayed or dipped into veg oil.
I use a torch cause I bought it for other uses .

I'm new to the WSM but have been starting my kbb for my kettle for years using a 2" pipe cap filled with Denatured Alcohol for a few years now. I just did my second cook using WW lump started with briquetts on top. It came out really good but I've been having trouble controling temperature spikes not sure if it's the lump or not although I'm starting to wonder if maybe I'm using too much wood. I do like the smell and taste of the WW vs the kbb. I may try Royal oak Briquetts and would like to get my hands on some WW Briquetts as well.
 
I started the Wicked with ten lit kingsford coals last Saturday and it lit off quick.
