Charcoal bins

Does anyone keep their charcoal (lump or briquettes) in plastic bins or trash cans instead of storing them in the bag? I always found that the bags they come in would undoubtedly get wet or dampen even if I did cover them. I also found that when lighting my WSM, I had to sift through the larger pieces of lump to find smaller pieces to fill a chimney so it would light.

My solution? I bought two 5 gallon buckets from Home Depot (the orange ones) and separated my lump into two buckets - larger pieces in one and then medium to smaller pieces in the other. I found this to work great because I no longer have to sift through a bag and ultimately cake myself in charcoal. I also now have a way to keep the charcoal dry and out of the way. Anyone try something like this? I was thinking maybe a small aluminum trash can if I stockpile enough!

I use a galvanized metal trash can. I'd be lyin' if I told you the capacity but I'm guessin' it's around 40 gallons. It will hold a lot of charcoal. I think I got six bags of Kingsford briquettes in it from the Memorial Day sale. I need to get another one because I've started experimenting with lump. Although we don't see a lot of rain in this part of Texas at this time of year, I don't want the lump to get wet either.

My wife has been after me to paint it a dark green or black. I'll have to use vinegar or muriatic acid on it to clean the galvanized film off before I do, though.

I bought one of the kingsford tubs. I like it cause I can just leave it on the patio under the deck by my grills. Easy to pour into the chimney

A dozen or so bags of Stubbs and RO in garage, two Kingsford charcoal Kaddies– one Stubbs, one lump – on patio and more lump in the Performer's bin.

I've kept mine in a plastic tub before. I had one for charcoal and one for smoke Woods. Never had an issue. Sweet Pammi Sue bought me an old metal foot locker that I use now. It's not as air tight as the plastic bins, but it hasn't caused any issues.

My thinking is that if you're storing under a carport you need some kind of bin (I sure do), but if you're storing in a garage or similar then probably not.

I bought one of the kingsford tubs and just place the bag in there, I don't empty the bag into it. Much easier to grab a bag out of it and pour. It keeps the bag & charcoal dry.

I use a galv trash can, probably 35-40 gallon, to dump hot ash & spent charcoal in. I have noticed that water (small amount) is getting inside from where the handle attaches to the lid. Since it's ash, I don't care but something to watch out for with charcoal.

The rest of the bags get stored in the shed.
