Center burner tube hole alignment

I have a question about the alignment of the center burner tubes on a Genesis. I have an old Genesis 1. On my grill. the center burner tube is set to have the holes aligned in a horizontal setting. Meaning the holes are set so that the flames come out the sides, like the other tubes do (though the other ones only have one set of holes, not two). My center burner tube has the slot at the end that attaches to that tube that connects all the burner tubes, configured so that the center burner tube has the holes coming out the sides horizontally, if that makes sense. See my pics in this thread: http://tvwbb.com/showthread.php?65693-Old-red-top-what-is-it-and-advice

However, I have seen some pics on here that show the alignment of the center burner tubes is in the vertical position, meaning the holes are on top and the bottom. See the pics in this thread: http://tvwbb.com/showthread.php?65889-Need-Help-with-Rusted-Bolts

which is the correct alignment? Does it make a difference? Is there are a reason that there are two different alignments?

Thanks!

They changed the center burner to a single row of top mounted ports. I'm sure it was done mostly to save on production costs.

Hello all,
I'm new to the list and to Weber gas grills. I'm resurecting this old thread as it is the only one I found that was relevant. I picked up a 2002 Genesis Silver B and doing the usual research. When I removed the Flavorizer Bars and went to give the burner tubes a wire brushing I noticed that the center tube has the holes pointing 'down' and is just sitting on top of the crossover tube. It works that way but it doesn't seem right. Any thoughts on whether this legit or a MacGyver special.
Thanks for any info,
Steve

Welcome to TVWBB Steve!

Holes should not be pointing down. If that crossover is the right one and intact the center burner when pointed up should fit in the notch in the crossover.

Thanks for the reply Jon.
The crossover bar does not have a notch tab al all. I can see and feel all around it and there are no rough spots or any sign of something breaking off. It looks like a two burner crossover but I believe they are shorter. Both the front and rear burner holes both point inward and not up and I'm not sure if that is normal or not. I can buy a new crossover since they all have the notch and just flip the tube over but it's a puzzle.

Front and rear pointing inward is normal. Middle should point up.

Thanks for the useful info everyone.
I have no idea where this crossover bar originated but unless there is an alternate BBQ universe I doubt that Weber designed the burner set up this way. It actually does work but….
I appreciate the link Steve H. but my burners look pretty good. I think I’ll just buy a new crossover bar, flip the center tube over and it should be fine.
It all looks original except for the lid thermometer. The warming racks and the stamped SS grates have a lot of baked-on grease but the flavorizer bars are in good shape and no rust anywhere. For $75 with a 3/4 full Blue Rhino I feel ok with this one.
Tnx agn,
Steve

Cool, I was 90% sure you would opt for the new crossover tube anyway instead of a brand new set for $10 more. I was just throwing it out there. Your original crossover tube had a tab on it that held the center burner in place and it broke off because that burner tube set is probably original and over twenty years old at this point. The burner tubes themselves probably aren't far behind the crossover tube as far as longevity.

It is a shame about that center mounted lid thermometer, it looks pretty bad. The warming racks are chrome plated steel so those do tend to get rusty over time and need to be replaced or discarded. The stainless steel grates unless they have broken welds can be cleaned up to like new condition with a wire wheel in a drill.
