As with my 2018 post about Langer's Deli, I am exercising my prerogative as moderator to include Canter's Deli in the BBQ Restaurant Directory even though it's not a barbecue restaurant because of Canter's famous pastrami...and many of us make pastrami in our backyard smokers...so that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

We stopped in at Canter's for lunch, it's been on my to-do list for years. It's one of the icons of the LA restaurant scene, providing an authentic, traditional Jewish deli experience since 1931. It's also known as a hang-out for movie, television, and music celebrities.

Mrs. TVWB had the pastrami reuben sandwich, the most popular item on the menu, with a side of fresh fruit. I had the pastrami dip sandwich with fries. We also spotted a Monte Cristo sandwich on the menu, one of my favorites and something you don't see very often, so we ordered one of those, too. The reuben was delicious, my pastrami dip was great, and the steak fries were hot and exceptionally crisp. I ate just half of the dip so I could eat half of the Monte Cristo, also quite good. The extras were reheated and enjoyed later. Waiter service was friendly and very attentive.

There's a big to-go counter if you want to order food on the run, and don't forget to check-out the huge selection of bakery items. We got a selection of delicious cookies for the road, and I would have bought challah bread and bagels and chocolate babka and more if I could have.

Canter's is located in a busy part of town and the neighborhood is a little grungy, but don't be afraid. You can get validated parking at the lot on the corner adjacent to the restaurant and it's just a few steps to the front door.

Canter's is a piece of LA history, check it out if you can! Here are some pics.

Mmmm. A corned beef, pastrami and brisket on rye, please. Extra mustard. Need to get back down to Canters. Thanks for your review!

They had a location here in Las Vegas which was a victim of poor timing so it ultimately closed. It was in Trivoli Village, but was located in a wing that had just opened and had little foot traffic and had higher prices. Closest Jewish deli now is on the other side of Las Vegas in Henderson. The quality of the food when it was open was excellent.
