Cajun Bandit (Weber Grill Mod)

I think I'll be suprised if that isn't some kind of patent violation. it's so a wsm

the lid looks to be outside the body .. almost guarantee goo is gonna run down the outside of the mid section, maybe the bottom section too

the flat top lid is going to be a problem on long smokes, particularly if using water ... wet warm air inside condensates when it hits the lid .. on the flat top lid it's going to drip all over the meat, instead of running down like it does with our round lids

... world class smoker is a bit of a stretch, looks like painted steel to me ...

but anyway pretty neat idea, I like it, it would be great for someone with a kettle who wants to do a little smoking once in a while

. It appears to be a well built and thought out modification. I would like to incorperate the center body section onto my 2000 Performer. I had previously wanted to add my 18" WSM onto one of the 18" Weber Platinum Grills but those are not easy to come by

. I had, in the past, cut up a 55gal drum to add a center section to my performer but that didn't work out very well

. I'm hopeful it will meet my needs. I'll post some pictures when it arrives.
 
I happen to be an owner of two of the Cajun Bandits. I am the one who cooked the 60 pounds of Boston Butts on one smoker. I will be happy to report no goo on the outside of my smoker. I used the water pan and it was filled with 4 gallons of water. I have also cooked chicken and ribs on the smoker with good results. I also own an 18" Wsm which I am very, no extremely happy with. It can be no more a patent violation than the other knock off on the market. What it's not is a Weber Bullet. What is it? It's a very good smoker that is well built and a lot cheaper than the bullet. Not everybody can afford the $400 asking price for the Weber. I cook a few KCBS comps during the year and will be at Whistle Stop next month. I plan on having both there. Come see for yourself.

Red Flag #2 - J.Key joins TVWBB and his first post is to defend the unit.

Red flags don't automatically equal a problem, but buyer beware.

Personally, I'd rather see a drop in rotisserie ring for the WSM than a kettle/smoker conversion. To each his own.

How about the rotisserie for the kettle, would that fit on the new 22" WSM? Anyone try it yet?
 
Pat I usually only cook Whistle Stop and Maybe Riverfest in Decatur. Can't take the time off to cook many more even though I really would like to. As far as the red flags go guess it's just up to you to decide. I defend the product because I like it. Whether anyone else will is anybodies guess. I has a thing or two I would like to see different like the bottom vents the bullet has. Haven't had any trouble with it but still... As far as it being my first post I usually go to the BBQ Forum. Lots to learn there. Also I have modified mine with a Guru and a 5 cfm fan. Love it even more.
 
Hope to meet you at Riverfest. I've not yet decided whether ot cook there or apply to judge, but since my brother lives in Decatur and I have a free place to stay, I am definitely planning on puttin in an appearance.

I like the looks of the product, too. I would love to see one up close and personal.

Hey there everybody, my name is Chris Perres, inventor of the Cajun Bandit, I should have posted earlyer so J Key, my good friend and cooking partner didnt have to take all this negetivity by himself, now i understand that the first instinct of some is to reject the things they dont understand, and thats OK, but i do feel sorry for them, those people with all those posting that are probably revired by a lot of people, people that dont own a 22.5" WSM, and mabey cant afford one, so I will let the people talk for it, I am encouraging some of the buyers to write me a review of the product as soon as they can and i will post them un-edited, pro's and con's Thanks Chris. Oh, one more thing, I can biuld WSM stainless door replacements!

wow, you cajun bandit boys are awful thin skinned, the patent thing was a joke, and the rest was constructive criticism, best guess at potential flaws having not having used one, you might might also recall I said I liked it

I'm very interested in your product and would love to see one up close and personal. I am in Birmingham. Do you have these bad boys on display anywhere in the North Alabama area? Or maybe going to be cooking on one at a comp somewhere soon?

(And I would love a couple of those doors!)

Hey Pat, I'm in huntsville, we dont have any in retail stores yet, but if your ever up here i'd be glad to show one to you, if you like it you could save a lot in shipping also. the first prototype had a weber door, it was made of steel, i decided to go with a hinge door instead so i never made a stainless one, but its all the same except the cost of the stainless, also i would like to know your thoughts on a stainless cajun bandit for about $60.00 more on the cost. That would include the cylinder the door and the coal ring, the water bowl is already stainless.

let me see what i can get the stainless for on the door and i'll get back to you on that price.

it will probably be 18 gauge.
 
Cajun Bandit Mini Review:
After corresponding with Chris by email, I purchased the Cajun Bandit thru Ebay on Wednesday morning, it was delivered on Friday.
My first impression is that the CB is well built,of heavy gauge steel, well finished with black paint. The unit comes with a stainless steel water pan, 18 inches in diameter, which is huge, holding more water than would ever be needed. The barrel is 18 inches tall, both ends fit my Weber OTG very snugly, with the Weber dome fitting over the barrel, unlike the WSM. It comes with two plated side handles, mounted horizontaly. The 8" by 10" side door is hinged on one side, fits snugly, closed by latching hasp. The legs are plated steel, very sturdy compared to the WSM, 1/4" by 1". The handles and pan/grate holder are attached by pop rivets. The charcoal holder appears to be stainless steel, using the grate from the OTG as the bottom. The conversion comes with a Weber 22.5 plated/unhinged cooking grate. Installed the top and bottom cooking grates are 8" apart.

I am very pleased with the quality and concept of the conversion and can't wait to smoke ribs and pork shoulder. I intend to mount the legs tomorrow. However, the conversion can be used just sitting it on top of the OTG or Performer. The top of the dome is 58" high with the barrel mounted on the OTG with factory Weber legs. My only criticism is that the unit arrived scratched a little, however, I intended to paint the unit green like my OTG. I did email Chris and suggested that he use more packing since the steel legs are very heavy and likely moved around during handling. I would also prefer that the attachments be done by stainless steel screws and nuts, rather than pop rivets. I am looking at it as I write, to see how it can be "pimped"

sorry about the scratches, the packageing for this is an ongoing thing, if anybody can pimp it you can L Dean, the pics of the smokey joe turned into a mini wsm were great, and the wheels and handles on your 18" wsm, i think you should post them, others might be interested.
 
Thanks for jumping in with reviews LDean and J. Key. I just stepped up to a performer, and I've been wondering what to do with my One Touch Silver. Chris, you might be getting an order from me in a month or so.
