Burn Time

Last weekend I did 2 racks of BRITU which turned out beautiful.

For the fire, I used the MM with Comp-K but I didn't quite fill the ring to the top. After the ribs were done I kept the fire going just like something were still in there. I wanted to see just how long of a smoke I could get.

At about 9 hours the temperature started falling off and I opened all the vents to 100%. I checked the fire ring and there was basically just ash left and the temperature just kept going down.

Is that duration about correct? Does Kingsford Blue last longer than Comp-K? Would I have gotten longer if I totally filled the ring before starting?

Trying to get a feel before doing my first overnighter.

I got some Comp K to test recently and used it to smoke a butt, about 8-9 lbs. I filled the ring with as many unlit briquets as I could fit in it and used about 20 lit for the MM on top of that. I got 13 hours with just about nothing left over. The Comp K help temp at 250 lid very well.

Thanks Guys.

It sounds like if I had filled it up all the way I would have gotten the other 3-4 hours I was thinking should have been there. It held 225-235 just beautifully the whole time so when the temps started falling off I figured it had given it's all.

Now, on to that butt this weekend.

Yes, by all means, give it a go. It's always better to start with more fuel than you'll think you'll need, although with a decent sized butt it's hard to start with too much. Fill that ring up and let it rip. BTW, mine is the 18" WSM.
