I'm looking into getting a second WSM and have 2 questions:

How accurate is the thermometer that comes with it?
What the dif b/22" v 18" in terms of amount of fuel needed?

Even though its bigger but you still only wanted to do 3 slabs ribs, do you need more fuel due to the larger size?

Right now I roll the slabs to get more that 3 per grate. Does laying them flat produce any dif results as you would be able to do on the 22"?

Thanks

What the dif b/22" v 18" in terms of amount of fuel needed? Yes. I could get a solid 18 hours out of the 18 but not the 22 more like 10 to 12 hours

Even though its bigger but you still only wanted to do 3 slabs ribs, do you need more fuel due to the larger size? Not double the fuel but more like 1.5 times more.

Thanks

A very controversial topic to say the least. In my experience the 2009 WSM thermometer reads fairly consistently ~30 degrees lower than the grate as measured with my Maverick ET-73. However there are times where they will read much closer.

I generally aim for 235 at the lid which seems to be more like 260ish at the grate. I've had pretty good results keeping it here for ribs, butts and brisket.

It is rather controversial...

everything I read on here suggested that the lid was lower than the grate...however when I did Ribs the other day the maverick on the grate and the lid thermo were in lock step with one another. (it was a rather windy day and I had the top vent downwind, therefore the thermometer was "upwind" so to speak...not sure if the airflow contributed to this or not...)

I will be doing an overnight 3 butt cook this weekend for another observation point.

From what I have read I believe the thermo itself to be accurate and the discrepancies are due to how heat/air-flow distribution inside the grill. But that is just, like, my opinion man.

I have the 18.5 jobber.
