A friend who has a tree service, gave me some Oak. By accident , there is a nice peice of birch in with it. Does/has anyone used Birch for anything? If so, how is it?

Keith, Birch is a great wood to use for smoking. It's a medium smoke wood. When I was ablr to get the Maple Leaf Charcoal back in the day, it had a lot of birch in it and was fantastic. Here's a chart for you. Link to flavor chart.

Hey Brian - nice chart. I see black birch, is white birch any good? </div></BLOCKQUOTE>
Yes it is indeed fine to use. Both are sweet smelling woods. On that chart the Sweet is the White Birch. Not sure if ever had the pleasure to smell fresh cut birch but it's fantastic smelling, Yep, just like Birch Beer.

Beechnut is another one. I need to make a trip up to Lycoming Co PA sometime soon and score some White Birch and Beechwood.

Yes - I used to chew on birch bark and roots sometimes as a kid running around up in Frackville area.

White birch is stacked up at the local super fresh. That's why I asked

Black birch is also known as sweet birch, and is the variety from which birch beer is made (it has a sweet sap that's tapped like maple -- not as concentrated in sugar though). Birch smoke always smells sweet to me no matter what kind it's from though -- I was lucky enough to score a bushel of white birch bark shavings last summer, I let them dry and now I use them for tinder. Very nice!
