Best Remote Probe Thermometer

Haven't seen this topic updated in a while, not sure what new stuff may be out there.

I have a Nu Temp, which I bought a few years ago based on these boards. My Maverick just kept losing the signal to the remote. Today, I discovered the hard way what happens to a Nu Temp when the cleaning woman puts it in the oven along with the kitchen towels and you preheat the oven for dinner.

I went to buy a replacement, but Nu-Temp is showing as "back ordered."

So, what's everyone's favorite and why?

I'm not the biggest fan of the Maverick/Redi-check ET-73, but it seems to be the only thing out there with the features I like: remote, temp for both meat and WSM, alarm, etc.

if you can do without the alarm and the remote, try the $20 thermoworks one. We have two and they haven't failed us yet (unlike the countless others we've wrecked).

I have gone through three digital remotes this summer ranging from 14.99 to 59.99 and they all either did not work properly or failed after a few uses. I ordered the mav et 73 and although i have only used it twice it seems to work fine. Time will tell...

Give Nutemp a call or email, they might be able to help you out. Their email is service@nu-temp.com. I had some probes go out on me after 4 years and they were showing out online, sent them an email and they helped me out.

I love the Nutemps, just wish they had an off button.

I've used the same ET73 and the Rotisserie version for years with good results. They aren't very rugged so don't bounce them around or get them too close to the heat source.

For both units I spent the extra bucks and ordered the hi temp probes that I have tougher jackets on them and are longer in length. I think a set of these is $26. They are listed as options in the instructions. The originals that ship with it keeps the cost down. They don't like it too much when you rest a lid on them and water intrusion during cleaning can kill them if you aren't careful.

Not waterproof, so cover them with a can or plastic container to keep the rain out.

Haven't had those issues with the upgraded probes.

I really like the remote and the alarm functions over the years they have come in handy. I often do cooks where I am using the WSM and/or Performer and the kitchen equipment and the remote/alarm has saved my butt (literal and figurative

) Many times. Especially during overnight cooks.

It would be great if they offered a ruggedized version of the ET73 for those of us willing to spend a little more IMHO.

And longer cables than those dinky little things they provide - one shouldn't have to pay extra for longer, "optional" ones.

OOPS! Sorry Ray, apparently I passed over your observation re the length of the cables - yet ANOTHER senior moment for me....but I STILL think it's a raw deal!

Original Cooking Thermometer/Timer </div></BLOCKQUOTE>I assume that Thermoworks makes all the $20 Polder/Oneida/Taylor/Pyrex TW362 knockoffs as well. I have Pyrex and Oneida versions and they work just fine just without remote.


As for remote, the ET73 has worked fine with me. Range depends on obstacles between the units. While it won't work from the backyard to my "Daddy Cave" in the front, it does work to the Kitchen in the rear.

No worries, I tend to agree - but if your competitors are not doing it you almost have to play that way to stay in the price point. I've had the Poulder unit without all the buzzes and whistles and remote. It's ok, but it also comes with the cheap probe. Same with Nu-Temp, they aren't shipping with long/HD higher temp probes either.

Who should go first

Tough market.
