Best Charcoal Choices For Us CANADIANS

Hey everyone,

Up here in Canada we seem a bit limited in our charcoal choices. Luckily when I started a few weeks ago Home Hardware had a nice sale for KBB (Kingsford Original) Briquettes. What other GOOD options are there for us?

I would like to try Weber Briquettes, but they are either out of stock everywhere or never on sale of course.

I also would like to try Jealous Devil Lump...but again, pricey.

Is Royal Oak Ridge any good? - it is the cheapest...

What else should be considered? Fogo maybe?

Would love to hear thoughts/opinions/suggestions!

Using charcoal on both my WSM 18 and my new Performer Deluxe as well as some campfires. Mostly used to use Dragon's Breath for camping, but that seems discontinued.

Also - where do you buy your charcoal in Canada?

I see a lot of folks bad mouthing KBB but I have always had good luck with it, the 1 bag of lump I give up on it in my kettle because it popped so bad it was leaving embers on the meat and I don't like eating grit, ended up using it in my smoker where it couldn't reach the food, never needed the higher temps folks liked with it either.

I use the Royal Oak Ridge as well as the lump. Have good luck with both. Get it on sale at Canadian Tire but the best sales are at Wal-Mart. For some reason I don’t see KBB on sale here very often. I assume they sell it all out at the regular price so no need to mark it down.

I have always used KBB and never had a problem with it. It usually is readily available but Canadian Tire seems to be out right now. My last smoke I used Jealous Devil Lump and was impressed. Burnt clean with little smoke, no odor, got to temperature quickly and maintained well. My only complaint is the size of the lump. There are tiny pieces and pieces the size of my fist. I had to added lump 4 times over the duration of the smoke. I am assuming there is a lot of empty space so it looks like I have more loaded into my smoker than I actually have. Next time I am going to organize the lump in the smoker better and see if this changes.

We have a fair amount of choice here in Manitoba but it’s all costly except the Royal Oak orange bag stuff.

Really like using the Weber briquettes when available at Walmart or Lowe’s for the best price on them.

If the Weber briquettes are unavailable then I try and grab the Kingsford blue bag.

Like the Master Chef lump from Canadian Tire for hot and fast cooking.

I find that the royal oak ridges work perfectly fine for fraction of the cost of a kingsford. I get them from Walmart or canadian tire for <$10

Nice to see another Manitoban here.

Another one here. I just used Weber charcoal for the first time ever. I’m very impressed with how hot and clean it burns. However, it pales in comparison for “Smokey flavour” that the KBB offers. I smoked wings last night with KBB and again tonight using Weber briquettes. The taste was night and day. Weber wasn’t terrible by any means, just not as strong as a smoke as I would like.

Trial & error dude, buy some different brands & start experimenting.

You can also throw on a wood chunk to amp up the smoke action if that's what you like
