Best Barbeque Book, other than Raichlen

I just wanted to throw this one out there for opinions. I was given 2 of Raichlen's books and they are OK. I'm looking for more of an old school barbeque purist feel. Thanks

Old school BBQ guys don't write books cuz their secrets die with them!!! haha Or the flip side is that they would probably be more like: add salt and pepper and slap on the grill!

Honestly I would just reccomend taking those recipes from your current books and try altering them more to your own tastes.

Man, ain't that the truth!!

Depends on if you're looking for recipes or just a good read.

I like Mike Mills' Peace, Love and Barbecue, but there are tons of good ones. Dr Barbecue's are good also

I have a couple of Raichlen's books, and while they have a ton or recipes, I wasn't that's impressed.

One book I did like is Dr. BBQ's Big-Time Barbecue Cookbook. I've taken several recipes, slightly modify them and they've turned out really well. I especially liked the mustard bbq sauce recipe. Just made another batch a hour ago for my pulled pork tonight.

I'm always looking for good BBQ books. The problem is that the kind of book I would like would be written by a seasoned pitmaster and not too many of them are sharing their secrets.

I like Barbecue Nation by Fred Thompson, and Mastering Barbecue by Michael H. Stines. Dr. BBQ's books are good I also use Raichlens Sauces Rubs and Marinades quite a bit. The one book that I was some what disappointed with Smoke and Spice.

glad im not the only one who feels that way Vic. But on the other hand "Smoke and Spice" made me feel like maybe I do have SOME (at least a little, lol) taste. Just a huge book for what little i've gotton so far from it. Not bein wise, just agreeing and saying that for anyone considering the purchase.
Ray Lampe makes some sugary things (which is fine, some days I really feel like making things that way, too) but the thing w/ him is I could talk to him. Like the part in the book where he discusses which fuels to use for a smoker, and/or best types of smokers. WHO CARES use what you have, or what works best for you or what you can afford.. or something along those lines,

thats more my style. So many topics and BBQ and music that drive me nuts.. they don't have to be the best guitar strings or guitar to sound GREAT... nor does the meat have to be grade A+ Hand Fed/and massaged daily Argintinian Beef to taste good either.. so many other things I won't list,

just me yappin' though.

One of the best reads available is this BBQ forum.
Look at how much information is available and updated daily. Look at how many recipes are in the recipe section in their various categories. there is no 10 books available with that much information. And the good part of all that is it was written by real people with real passion who were not out to make a dollar by writing something that looked pretty and was generally a re-hash of others ideas.
This forum focusses on sharing, helping and providing advice for others.
Most if not all the members of this forum have expanded their knowledge considerably from other contributors. Better than any book.

Keep up the good work.

Regards
