Beer can chicken and baked potatoes

I'm planing on trying Beer can chicken this weekend for the first time. It should be fun. Wife bought me a couple beer can chicken holders.

I'm going to try this recipe from food network HERE.

I was actually looking for the spice they use a the grocery store if anyone knows of that rub.

But my main question is how long would you cook the potatoes on the smoker. I was thinking maybe double the time of a normal oven say 2 hours?

What do you think?

It depends on the size, your temps, and so on, but a couple of hours is about right.
If you want to shorten the time, microwave the potatoes for let's say four minutes for four potatoes, and then go for one hour in the smoker.
As I said, the times will be different on temps, size and also the type of potato. You'll need to check.

Good luck on the BCC! You're in for a treat. It was the first thing I tried in the WSM and it came out beautifully. I had two 4.5 pound chickens on the bottom grate, and used a brine and at about 250-280 it was done in a few hours. I hadn't thought about potatoes in there too though, that's a good idea!

---This Sunday I am doing a couple of Beer Can Chickens without the Beer. My WAY: I place each chicken on a Beer Can chicken Holder without the can and then place it in a round deep dish pan. I then fill each pan with some apple juice and add my favorite rub to the juice. I place each chicken on the top grate of my WSM Classic when it reaches 300F. Once the chickens start cooking the chicken fat drops into apple juice spiced pan mixture and I start basting my chickens with this rub spiced apple juice-chicken fat mixture at the 2 hour point of the cooking and then every half hour until done, approximately at total time of 4 hours. Hope you enjoy your cook this weekend.
