Beef prices

What is a reasonable price/lb to pay for tri-tip? It has become one of my favorite cuts but we only have one grocerer in town (Whole Foods) that carries it and its an absolute rip off at $8.99/lb. Would a local butcher be a more logical and inexpensive route? Also....what should hanger steak cost per lb? Once again, only Whole Foods carries it 'by request' so you know it won't come cheap.

Unfortunately the price is determined by supply and demand. There is no national suggested cost. Chicago selling tri-tips for $3.50/lb won't help you or change the pricing at the local WF. If you are fortunate to have local independent butchers, I would certainly go visit them and see what they have to offer. Tri-tips in central TX run on the high side, last time I checked around $7/lb. For $8.99/lb you should be able to pick up some nice cuts of meat.

As Paul K said. I lived in Southern CA when I got hooked on tri-tip over 30 years ago. It was pretty hard to find it then in Los Angeles. But now it is easier to find in grocery stores here in WA state. Costco sells it for under $6/#. Have you tried wholesale markets that sells to the public? Just bought several tri-tip roasts for under $5/#, which is a good price.

I will check my local Costco today. I don't really want to buy it in bulk as I have very limited storage and am not a big fan of freezing beef.

I usually check the mail flyers every week for sales and have seen it as low as 2.29 a lb untrimmed. Smart and Final has pretty good prices too but there are about 5 or 6 tritips in a cryovac bag

Russell, If you have a Trader Joe's near you they carry Tri-Tip. Last I looked here in PA, they were $5.99lb. All the Tris I bought from TJ's have been good, and they leave the fat cap on. HTH
