BBQ Ribs in the oven?

My wife and I were talking last night and she asked me if it was possible to make ribs in the oven as good or close to as good in the smoker. I said if anyone knows it's someone from this site. This will be for cooking in the dead of the winter (sorry I'm not as much as a die hard as most of you).

Anyone have a way of getting a smokey flavor in the oven besides liquid smoke? Our oven does not have any venting because we live in a former brick schoolhouse(built in 1849).

If you must stay inside, you might try a rub with smoked paprika. OR....can you get your hands on a stove top smoker? If your stove is vented, you could smoke on the stove and finish in the oven. Just a thought...

Dave, here's an OVEN-BARBECUED SPARERIBS recipe from Cook's Illustrated that has an interesting approach to the smoke factor---smoky Lapsang Souchong tea leaves as part of the smoking medium.

Why not try these (or any other recipe) and compare them with WSM-smoked ribs?

And Spanish smoked paprika, but you'd have to use quite a bit of chipotle or smoked paprika to wind up with any smoky flavor.

Chris, I have watched that one several times over the years, and yes I agree, they do look pretty darn good for oven ribs.

One other option, if you're making a rub, use a smoked salt. I sampled various salts this past Fri and found a smoked salt quite pleasing. It should add a nice smoked flavor to anything.

Paul, here's how stupid I am

. I have one of those stovetop smokers in the basement that I forgot I had. I also have a bunch of different wood chips that go with it so it will be dusted off and used this winter.

Rita, I remmember seeing that a couple of years ago on TV. I printed your post and I'm definetly going to try it. I remember it looked good for oven cooked ribs.

Chris, I also printed your post so I can compare all three ways of doing them.
Thanks everyone for helping and maybe this winter will be a little easier to take with some spare ribs in my belly.
