BBQ Contest, question?

Does anyone know anything about events like the one below? For a change, I have one near me so I thought about stopping by for a few hours but wasn't sure what to expect. My interest was primarily to walk around, see some teams, equipment, smell the bbq and lv after 2 hrs but I have never been to such an event and don't know what to expect. This seems to be a small one but it is FBA sanctioned, whatever that means. Are events like this fun just to walk around and look? Do they usually charge admission?

Be very careful not to get any on you. It's an infection that once you contract, never really goes away.

I think you'll find a bunch people that like to laugh a lot, goof off a bunch, and generally have a good time. We tend to get loud and eat way too much. We might even have a beer or three.

I believe this will be Harmony's first year with this event so I really couldn't tell you what the turnout is going to be like. I did get an email the other day saying that they were looking for more teams. Unfortuntely it is the same weekend that a lot of teams will be up in Jesup, Ga.

The best way to sample the event would be to show up Friday afternoon. It is MUCH more relaxed and teams are more willing to stand around and BS. Saturday gets more hectic as the day goes on and very few will want to talk during turn-ins (11:00 to 2:00).

Normally, no admission is charged to just walk around.

If you want, I will be at Bartow Bluegrass & BBQ Festival November 12-13. Stop by and you can ask me anything you want. You may even get put to work. I pay in BBQ.

BBQ contests are a blast to go to! We are planning on going to the NC BBQ festival in Lexington next weekend! Haven't been to that one yet,but I am looking forward to sporting one of my TVWB shirts!

thx for the feedback, i will try to go. One last question on the topic. At what point is it just too late to show up on Friday. My point is, I work on Friday so can't get to Harmony until 5pm and it is dark at 7:30pm. Is it likely things will have died down to the point of it not being worth going at 5pm and staying till 7pm?

Died down??? By 7??? These people intend to be cooking all night. I usually try to sleep 1-5 am. Last contest, I decided if that was going to happen, I'm going to need ear plugs.

Saturday probably doesn't work too well for me and as pointed out earlier, that is "turn in" day and the pressure will be high. Sounds like showing up on friday late afternoon is ok so I think that's what I'll do. I appreciate the feedback on the subject.
