Dad's 2 brothers served in the Navy. One in the Silent Service on the USS Spot a Guppy class sub, the other on an LST in the South Pacific. Neither was very vocal about what they did. They kept a lot of it in. The one who served on an LST did admit to having boats blown outta the water when trying to land troops within feet of his boat. He said all he could do was grunt and keep going. The sub uncle also noted many times being stuck under a German battleship with depth charges going off all around him. Not know which one was "it". They were tough guys to endure the things they did. All of them were. Let's also not forget Korea, and Vietnam. Friends who came home from Nam and not in a box were so rattled. To this day one good friend still hides when he hears a low aircraft or a loud noise. He still can't shake the horrors he went through. Not to mention the health issues from Agent Orange having a bout with lung cancer from it, a crushed shoulder from falling out of a chopper and who knows what else.
