I will be using my WSM on my covered wooden deck. Has anyone ever used a 20" hot water aluminum drain pan for the base?? What are some good options to place underneath the WSM???
Tony,
The aluminum drain pan sounds fine to me. I use an extra large oil drip pan. It's plenty big for the WSM and I put a concrete patio paver on it and place my chimney on top of the paver. I've read where some use those terra cotta tiles like Home Depot sells also.
So you put the paver in the drain pan and start your chimney on top of that. When your coals are ready you move the chimney and set your WSM on top of the paver and proceed with cooking??? Sorry if these questions sound really dumb, just trying to figure out the best setup.
There are no dumb questions, especially when it comes to handling red hot coals. Yes,I put the paver on the pan and a Weber starter cube (you can also use paper to start the chimney) on the paver and place the chimney over the cube (centered over the cube).
I have a Weber chimney. It has a handy handle that makes it easy to get the coals into the pit. Some people do this in different ways but I like using the chimney near the pit.
I normally use the Minion method or a slight modification. Normally I use one half of a chimney or less of charcoal. I like starting out on the cool side and trying to hit my target pit temp from below rather than higher (hot). Vent control is much easier if you get the fire started right. You don't want to have to be continually adjusting the vents.
Tony,
One other thing I meant to mention. If you don't have a pair, I suggest you get a pair of grilling gloves for high heat. At some time, you going to need to handle something that is very hot. It's wise to have them on when handling a hot chimney. Some people use welding gloves. I think Harbor Freight sells some at a good price. I got some "Pit Mitts" at Kroger this summer, but I don't think they have them now. Amazon does carry them though.
Tony, I put some 3 inch casters on my 22.5 WSM and that has raised it high enough so that temps at the deck are not high enough to worry about. Having a "grease mat" next to it when in use can be helpful for those little "ooops" moments.
I use the same one as Kendall. Mines a 17 gal galvanized wash-tub from Ace, but HD also carries em in the cleaning aisle. I've used mine for 3 yrs and no it does not affect airflow on my 18.5" WSM.
Heres an action pic, that size leaves about 2" clearance for air-flow and room to fiddle with the lower vents.

What is it and where do you get those? Does it impede airflow in the bottom of the WSM? Thanks Kendall. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>
Tony,
Home Depot carries those tubs in the Lawn and Garden department at my local unless they've moved them out for their cold weather stuff. It's a 16.75 gallon tub made by Behrens. I use the 6 gallon one with the top to dump my charcoal dust in then dump it in a garbage bag (after it cools).

So much trouble and effort.
A 12x12 paving block works just fine and fits the legs just right.
No need for a bucket or tub. Nothing drips out that need's catching. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>
No troubles here. I bought it yrs before I got the WSM. I don't have a mop sink (utility) and I needed something to soak the grates on the OTG. I found out that @ 12" tall it makes a good wind-block as it's high enough to shield the bottom vents. And on a very windy day it helps contain any stray hot embers or coal from falling out esp on my wooden deck.
And when I don't use it for a container, I flip it over to set the lid or mid-section on during a start-up. It's a multi-tasker..
Also makes a nice raised platform to set my SJP on.

Tony, do you mean like this (I sent this one to Chris back in 2005 and it's on the TVWBB site now. Photo was from the first fire in the then new WSM).
I have since changed over to a concrete mat made to be used under grills. I got this one at home depot a few years back. IMO it looks better than the aluminum pan. But anything that will not burn can pretty much be used to protect the deck. The water heater pan was used under the Orion cooker (which was a $49 find at Home Depot also).
