Bark on wood?

So I recently ordered 20 lbs of apricot wood online. I was dismayed to see bark on about half of the chunks in the box. Is there an easy way to get the bark off the wood? Does it really even matter? Thanks much for all the help!
 
Don't worry about the bark. It'll help to hold some moisture in your wood, but if it's easy to knock some off before a smoke, go ahead. I wouldn't risk injury with a hand axe, though. :rolleyes:
 
Cool, thanks to you both! Guess I always heard bark is not good. Makes it much easier to deal with without having to mess with the bark. Hoping the apricot turns out some good BBQ. Will be my first time using it.
 
Bark is more of a problem if the wood isn't well seasoned,you can get some nasty smoke from it. I don't take the bark off.

Let us know how you like the apricot.
 
From what I've read no one really knows for sure if the bark makes a real difference. However, some will say that the bark throws off a flavor different from the wood, so to be safe, I don't use it. But like other things, the smoke is only effecting the outer surface of the meat, lucky to get down 1/16 of a inch or so, oversmoking is the bigger worry...................................d

It is about impossible to purchase fruit woods without bark. The majority of fruit trees won't get as large as hardwoods so whoever is selling it will use every bit they can. The larger branches and trunk are usually sold in split form. The smaller chunks are the smaller branches so you will have bark. As mentioned I have not had any issues using chunks with bark and I would not risk my hands in trying to remove it. You could possible put the chunks on top of your chimney as it lits to get the bark to burn off a bit first. I wouldn't go through the effort though.
 
I used to remove bark if it had mold or fungus growing on it. Now I just place the pcs bark down on the chimney during lite-up. That 3-4 min over HH will burn off any nasties.
