Bar-B-Kettle/OTG hybrid

Has anyone ever taken a OTG silver or gold and made a hybrid? What I am talking about is taking a 18.5 lid vent replacement kit and drilling out the bottom of of a OTS/OTG and putting the vent down there like an old Bar-B-Kettle. Just a thought. Have a older platinum offered to me for free and am planning on making a modern day "Westerner". Since I am going to paint and "do stuff" to it why not try this.

Thoughts, please.

i'm confused...
a OTS or a OTG has elongated slots for vents on the bottom... and you want to add daisy wheel vents to it??

It certainly sounds doable. I guess you would just have to watch that the sweepers don't get hung up on the rivets or nut/bolt that fastens the vents.

I second what Timothy said. My concern would also be damage to the OT sweeper blades, or interference in their motion.

This means putting the daisy wheel vent(s) beyond the reach of the sweeping system. Might work really well for zoned/indirect cooking, yet give you the ease of cleaning that the OT system provides.

Properly done, you could have the best of all worlds.

I don't know how you would attach the wheels. The sweeper would hit the nuts that hold on the wheels. If you want to retro fit the three wheels you might just have to close off the three slots and forget about the sweeper. In the end you might just want to leave it the way it is, and look for an old three wheeler. Just my opinion.

I don't get it, but I wanna see it. Will you be utilizing the Swiss Army Knife for this project?

I also don't get the concept.
I think too much air will get to the coals..
While a 3 wheeler gives you more control of the air flow, the OT's are designed for easy ash removal. The 2 designs aren't really compatible.
A design that closes off the OT's vent on an individual basis, that would be something worth seeing.

Brian, you can add vents like the smokey joe gold on the side, the vents would not interfere with the ash sweeper.

I tried to add three 3 hole daisy vents to the side of an 22" OTG before I got the Cajun Bandit conversion, thinking I would get better control and just use the OTG sweeps to clear any ash buildup. Epic fail!

The vents never got a good seal and fully closed let a lot of air in, OK if I wanted a steady 350* cooker, but not the goal I was looking for. I also tried the Cajun Bandit with a Silver w/3 vents and I abandoned it in favor of the OTG.

Take a look at the Smokey Joe Platinum ash sweep mod and look what people did with them and their experiences, but I believe they were trying to achieve nuclear sear temps.

Brian, thanks for the info that was what I was looking for, someone who had tried it before. Still may go a little mad scientist with it. Been a while since I used the welder. Thanks to all for the input.

Hi Brian Z,
I have an older style Platinum (looks like a Performer w/out gas) and I marked what I estimated to be 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and full open on the ring that holds the ash bucket. The ash sweeper will never provide the fine control that the older style vents do but It works good enough for me.
