Backyard BBQ competitions

I am thinking about entering a Backyard BBQ competition. Should be easy enough to find one here in the DMV (DC. Maryland, VA). For those of you have done it, what was your experience like. The pros and cons etc. BTW does anyone know of the non KCBS bbq judging class? I looked on the KCBS website, but alas they aren't in my immediate area.

The only one I did was VERY informal! I took a portabella sausage stuffed marinated boneless pork loin and literally harvested some parsley from the guys garden for garnish! I was the only one using a Weber which was on site. Everyone else did gasser projects. I did win hands down!
It was a very informal party and brought my own platter with board insert. Presentation was good for mine, even though the host had said that "Presentation will be a factor"
As I said, this was friendly competition and may not be quite what you're thinking about but, it was a ball! I was informed afterward that I had been the only one who took it as seriously as I did. Hey, it was really just making something I would have made for family with a touch more careful slicing. I need to bang out another one of those, I have not done one in a long time!
Have fun and I wish you the best of luck.

We started competing last year and have had a great time with it. We jumped in feet first and did a KCBS for our first contest, it was a lot of fun and we learned a ton. We did 5 more contests this year and learned something new at every one. I would recommend going in with realistic expectations with the main goal of having a good time and meeting other bbq people. Also remember you are cooking for judges and not your friends and family, focus on cooking the meat perfectly and having good flavors but nothing to extreme.
