I smoked a small pork shoulder yesterday and used some homemade asian style rub. It turned out much better than I expected. Normally the flavors in bbq rubs tend to fade after several hours on the smoker but this stuff still smacks you in the mouth. I used Chinese 5 spice, curry power, Indian hot chili power, sea salt and some Riley's all purpose seasoning for bulk. I also used brown sugar after I applied the rub.

Kind of an odd smoke ring on this one. The smoke flavor was perfect along with the spices.

I made stir fry with some of is and it was fantastic.

Looks like some good stuff!

for an asian flavor, I like to make my own five spice and add a touch of ginger. Hand ground/mixed five spice is far superior to pre-mixed (IMO) and works well solo. I recommend giving it a go. If you're interested I can see if I can dig up the link to the recipe I use as my starting point.

smoke rings can be weird like that. ribbons of pink and I've even seen purple.
