ash disposal

I have been putting my ash in a large trash can, usually bag it and put it to the curb. Now I have too much, can is full. Some one told me to scatter it in the back yard. The can is full of 80% kingsford, and 20% lump. Is this a bad idea?

I have dumped it in the backyard as well as in the garden with no ill effects. If you have dogs or cats just make sure you don't have any unburnt briquettes, my dog eats them.....

Sometimes you CAN do something but you need to ask yourself WHY. Why would you want to spread ash in your back yard? Especially if you're going to dump a large load all at one time. Why not just throw them to the curb with the trash.

I've spread a load (one kettle at a time) on the grass with no problem, but I don't know if a small area could absorb a whole can at one time. If you have a really big yard, then I guess it wouldn't be a problem. I think the "risk" is that the ash will screw up the natural PH of the area and cause some issue with certain types of plants.

I bought a small galvanized trash can from the hardware store with a tight fitting lid. Once the ashes have gone out in the WSM, I usually wait 2 or 3 days, I pour them into the trash can.

Depending when the can gets 1/2 full, I then empty them into a plastic bag and they go out to the trash on pick-up day.

Ash from lump is fine to use in landscape being from just wood, although I believe it makes the soil alkaline. Spread it thinly or use in a compost pile.
Ash from briquettes should not be used in landscape as the briquettes contain things that, over time, can be harmful
