Anyone soak their wood?

Nowhere does it mention soaking chunk wood? I find that I am not smoking much out the top unless I stoke the coals every half hour. Is that because I did a slight soak? I figured the wood would burn to fast dry?

Thanks in advance!

My brother in law still insists that it improves the smoke and makes the wood last longer. Same as water in the pan, "adds moisture!" LOL!

No. Once I got the hang of this whole smoking thing, I stopped soaking my wood. You're putting the wood into a really hot environment, which means all that water is going to boil off very quickly. Maybe it buys you some time, technically speaking, but not a substantial amount. You should instead focus on limiting the amount of oxygen that gets to your chamber. That's how you get your smoke wood to smolder, and you don't need to worry about soaking it overnight to get the job done.

If all I have are wood CHIPS, I will either soak them or wrap them in foil with holes punched in the foil (I use a regular old dinner fork). I don't soak wood chunks....

Russell,
How did you shorten the link to "Smart Guy"?
Anyone?

I soak my wood shreds, but not chips or chunks. I don't know that soaking the shreds makes anything better; I am pretty sure that foiling them well is more important. I foil my chips usually, no water involved. Chunks, which I rarely have, just get mixed into the charcoal when smoking.

I use chunks; used to soak stopped soaking and saw no difference. Haven't soaked since.
