Another Thread for Advice on Used Summits

Ok Folks - First real post here. My current grill is a 2017 Genesis II E-310 with the open frame. I'm in the market for a new grill that has a closed-in frame with doors to deter animals and is at least 4 burners (although 6 would be nice) to fit a larger size skillet insert. I like the idea of having side burners and searing functionality as well.

The Genesis II SP-435 would probably be my first choice (primarily due to cook box design) if I could get lucky and find one used for around $600 or less but I'm thinking the chances of this are slim. I have also been looking hard at used Summits from around 2008-2012. I like the idea of more BTU's with the summit and have generally heard good things about quality cooking experiences and even heating. I don't see myself doing rotisserie much. Thanks to this great forum, I'm also well read on the lack of Summit cook box spare parts and the design flaw that leads to rust starting at the holes near the burner penetrations and ignitors.

I understand these Summit cook boxes all have a limited life driven by how fast the rust progresses from initial enamel separation around the holes, and that generally, there's no way to prevent the failure unless completely replacing that section with new aftermarket fabbed material or similar. Without fail, every used Summit I've looked at has rust at least in the corners of the square holes. I have come across an S-670 just now that has been rebuilt and actually has a new cook box that was installed ~18 months ago. Cook box is still in great condition with no enamel failure around the square holes except for one where the owner had reinstalled rusty ignitors and it appears to have been in contact with the cook box which cause premature failure of the enamel in that small area.

The seller has also previously converted it from LP to NG and is now offering to reconvert back to LP to sell to me. Seller has a brand new LP manifold and LP orifices for side and rotisserie burners he is prepared to install if I'm interested. Can anyone confirm these parts would be a proper conversion or are any additional parts/step needed?

Otherwise, the grill seems to be in excellent shape and has generally been completely rebuilt with new parts. What should I offer? List price is currently $1,200 but I don't think he was aware of the cook box issue. See pics below and attached for reference. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Wow, eighteen months and the new cook box is already starting it's journey to the junkyard. That's not a good omen of things to come. I think $1200 would be out of the realm of reality for me on that one. Yes, the new LP manifold along with the tank hanger/scale should be all you need to properly convert it back to propane. I just can't see spending more than maybe $500 for it plus it still looks like it will need some other parts soon. Your call obviously, just my opinion for what it's worth.

Thanks Steve. That's actually what I was thinking as well. Just not very confident seller will go for that assuming he's got a decent amount of cash invested in parts. What parts other than flavor bars are you seeing for future replacement? Seller has stated that burner tubes, rotisserie motor, rotisserie burner, side burner, wheels, and knobs are also new.

I wouldn’t waste $1200 on any summit gasser. He has nearly no ability to sell it. $500 max or walk away and buy a better or a new grill for yourself. And his conversion? The owner’s a real jokester IMO.

After looking at your pics more closely, probably just the igniters. Everything else does look pretty decent. Your seller also may have gotten that cook box replaced under warranty, maybe other things as well.

I also would not touch something someone "converted" one way and then the other. Unless someone has taken the time to instruct you, on intricacies of gas flow, regulation and so on. Then it's likely amateurish and dangerous. Honestly after owning one Summit and being let down by Weber on it, I'd never own another unless it was the brand new redesigned one that has addressed all issues those boat anchors bring to the table.

If the seller has a brand new LP manifold for it then that should be pretty straightforward I would think. Sounds like he changed the orifices on the side burner and rotisserie burner but has the LP versions to change back.

I definitely agree with this sentiment. I've worked on and adjusted propane systems in campers before. My thought process with this was I just needed to find out all the necessary components and/or orifice points so I can make sure I'm covering all bases and everything is installed correctly. Appreciate your intel!

That is a BIG if. Unless I actually lay eyes on all the parts, proving things done correctly, would not touch it, unless I had actual parts to effect a proper repair/conversion.
