Annoying buying experience: beware

I happened to pass by a junkyard that has a genesis 1000 on the side of the building. I stopped and asked him if he wanted to sell hit. He said it hasn’t been used for 20 years and been just sitting there. He said how’s $25 sound I said “sure cause I was thinking $20 so $25 works”. I also told him I’d have to come at the end of the week to pick it up. Fast forward to today… I show up and hand him $25 and he says “I said $45 not $25”. Then I said “no I heard $25 then I mentioned how I was thinking $20 so $25 is good”. I then confirmed if he wants to sell it for the agreed $25 and he said no. I took my money back and left.

The grill might have been worth $45 but it needed new grates, bars, wood. It’s about the principle about not getting ****ed around by others.

Be careful out there especially if you drive far and waste time and gas

I've been fortunate in life doing business on a handshake with few ringers. Every once in a while though, you get one over something simple as this.
Glad you passed it up - a better and possibly free grill will likely turn up as your reward!
100%. I am looking around still for that perfect grill. I will find it eventually. I hate people like this

I have expected this or something to go seriously wrong especially on the ones that seems to be way too good to be true and a decent drive. Thankfully knock on wood with well over 100 transactions through classified ads mainly Offerup, Marketplace and Craigslist it hasn't happened. I figure it will happen at some point which will suck but I figure I have more than made up for it many times over with the amount of deals I've scored. When it does happen I'll be at peace reminding myself of how many deals I gambled on and scored. Sure I have had things not go perfectly but nothing major.

I'm definitely not trying to downplay what happened. I'm so sorry you had this happen to you. Not cool at all. Just thought I'd share my outlook on it because it crosses my mind almost every time.

There are no “perfect” grills or deals, life doesn’t work that way. Now and the a great deal comes along but, they are never perfect.
That said, the guy was a putz, I hope he enjoys watching that old grill sit in his yard. Leave him in the dust!

Let me rephrase. I am looking for a grill that I can make perfect. A genesis 2000, or 3000. I plan to replace the handle and slats with Mahogany and repaint it. I can’t wait to find something
