Almond Wood

I was at a local gourmet grocery store yesterday and they had some Lazzari Almond Firewood. I was wondering if it would be good to smoke with. Wouldn't be to much trouble to cut the logs down into managable chunks.
 
That's all my dad uses in his BBQ catering business. It's nice and subtle, some compare it to hickory, but softer. It smells great while its burning too. Kind of sweet, almost fruity smell.

I'm guessing almond is quiet nice.

I'm positive that years ago on this forum I read something about the merits of using firewood when smoking because of not being sure where is has been or how it was processed. I'm sure someone with more knowledge on that subject can comment. I just know that I read it here from someone who knows more than me as this is not my field of expertise. Perhaps I'm just an ignorant fool

no your not, lol. I agree w/ you. I had a small amount givin to me in a plastic ziplock just to try and I remember it was just fine, but mild, which is a good thing sometimes.
 
I am surrounded by almond trees. So since I can get it for free, it is usually my go to wood. It is very mild and adds a hint of sweetness. IMO, it compares to pecan wood. I use it with all meats, especially when smoking beef.

When I was at Lazzari last month, I bought a 5 lb. bag of almond chunks and have used that with apple or cherry for a mild smoke.
 
Maybe I'll give it a try. I usually pick up smoke wood at BBQ Galore so I have a nice variety, just no Almond.

Chuck, I need to take a trip down to Lazzari to pick up some lump. There is no lump worth a darn in my area...at least I haven't located any yet. If I remember correctly I recall some saying their hardwood lump is ok, just not their mesquite lump.

I love their Mesquite lump, wish I could get it here, verses online only.

Lazzari Mesquite was the first lump I ever used back in 83 when I did my first smoke on a Brinkman. I found the phone # in a cooking magazine, Bon Appetit IIRC. Called Lazzari and had 2 - 50 lb bags sent to me.

ya I better double that, I love Lazzari misquite and never have used there hardwood lump (never seen it around, im sure its great, too). Excellent fuel. ya it all sparks, no problem. I've recently been enjoying "Best of the West" misquite, less then 3 bucks a bag at Home Depot or Lowes or maybe...maybe even Sutherlands, just cant remember which but I bought like 4 or 5 bags (small bags) and im down to half of one. gonna go track it down again soon If I get out that way.

BBQ Galore’s hardwood lump is Lazzari, but really marked up. I got three 40 lb bags at Lazzari in Burlingame for, I think, $16.06 a bag. It has some mesquite in it, but its all tree limb wood, I haven’t noticed any cabinet shop cutoffs or plywood in it. Some chunks are a little too long to get into a Weber chimney, but that’s why God made hatchets. It seems to burn long and doesn’t leave a lot of ash. I did a 15 ½ hour cook of a couple of shoulders, then another two hours on top of that for some sausage, on one heaping ring of Lazzari without adding any more. I had about a half a chimney left of snuffed lump for the next cook. I love the stuff, and it’s just a hop over to the other side of the bay for me to pick up a few bags. Like I said, they also have 5 lb bags of smoke wood chunks, I think about $5 or $6 a bag. They had quite an assortment of different smoke woods.
