aging wood

A friend trimmed his pecan tree and brought me
the limbs. There about 1.5" in dia. tappering down to .75". All are 5-6' long. Is this worth aging? If so, how should I cut the limbs & how long should it dry out?
Thanks, Larry

L. Perfect size. I like my smoke wood on the small size. I cut mine in 2-3 inch lengths Smaller diam branches a little longer. You can add as many as you like. I would dry at least 6 months with good ventilation over and under. You can always test the moisture of the wood , just cut it open and smell and feel.

Good find!

I do the same at my in-laws - pick up Pecan limbs for smoking.

Any hardwoods would be good. Fruitwoods too.

I prefer Hickory and Oak for 'heavy' cuts like Brisket and Butt. Pecan and Apple are good for Ribs, Poultry, and Fish.

BUT ... what really works best is what YOU like.

L, Mark's right , the best thing is to harvest your smoke wood about 6 months before you use it.
If you have a burning desire to try it soon, taka a few pieces & put in oven @ 200F overnite or the next time you smoke & put a few on the top rack of smoker. The heat will speed the drying out.
