Adding Fireboard to Weber Performer

I have seen Fireboard mods to the WSM. I want to add something like this to my new Crimson standard performer to turn it into a smoking machine.
I currently use the maverick XR50 Thermometer.
With my crimson performer there is a factory hole where the ignition assist would normally be.
I put an SnS smoke hole cover on that hole for now ( it really helps dialing in the air flow).
I want to utilize that factory hole & add the Fireboard Drive Blower or PitViper,Venom, ThermoWorks Billows or something similar.

  • Does anyone here have experience adding the Fireboard, Venom or Pitviper to a standard 22" kettle?
  • Is there a better alternative to Fireboard.
  • Would I need to drill the existing hole larger?
  • Is that hole location in a good spot? ( see pictures below)

Have you looked into the Spider Grills 'Venom'? That is probably what I would go with.
I was looking at that.
its a bit much ( size ect..)The Billows + Thermo works seems to be a simple solution, I would have to buy the ThermoWorks Smoke
I am curious out of all these which is reliable + best value for the cost

Thermoworks has more than one "smoke" model.

A Smoke X2 or a Smoke X4 will run the billows, however the original "Smoke" will not run a billows.

Thermoworks also has a Signals controller which will run a billows and connects to a phone via an App vs a dedicated remote.

I have a Smoke X4 and a billows and I really like the Smoke X4.

I use the billows for overnight cooks but otherwise the billows sits in a box and is getting a bit lonely. I've found for most of my smoking I don't need a fan and don't bother setting it up.

I've read positive comments about the Fireboard Drive, but have never used one or even seen one first hand.

( edited slightly for clarity )
