A Vent Turner Thingy..

I just fired up my gently used 22.5" WSM yesterday, and after scorching my fingertips a few times cause the vents open/close opposite of the 18.5", I ran out to the garage to grab a glove and saw these.

They are some extra SS column caps my Son made a few years ago at a metal shop he worked at. Being the pack-rat I am I saved them and figured I could use them on the grill.
Maybe for a few vertical roasters or a chamber to hold smoke pellets.

But back to the vents.. They are wide enough to use as a handle and open enough so you can still see what % you are adjusting.

So look around you're garage cause you never know what you might find useful. And if your handy you could make one out of metal or wood.:)

Just get a cabinet door knob from a hardware store and mount it to the vent tab. A wooden knob won't hold the heat, but I don't have an issue with my SS knob I installed.

Thanks Tim, you justified my only answer when my wife says "Why don't you throw that stuff out", and I reply "Oh no I may need that for something someday"
Nice find

My rule is 3 years.................if something is collecting dust for 3 years in my garage and i did not need it
for anything it goes to trush or donations or ebay =)
And yes, sometimes I go like oh s...... I could use that now but I dont like clutter.
But thats just me.

You're right about your plan. I'm all for keeping stuff, but I don't want to appear on American Pickers or Hoarders!

Now why would I do that 4 times (actually 3 cause I only touch the top vent when shutting down) when I can just use this?
I have boxes of cabinet hardware, but I like this better cause it will never get hot.

Ummmm, cuz it'll never be footsteps away? Might as well use a glove if you gotta use something unattached.

I personaly like things attached. That way they are always there and i dont have to be looking for it if I need it "right now in this second" .

I like to keep things simple, and normally I'll just use my shoe, but if wearing sandles I'll just walk out to the garage and grab my off set fireplace poker to adjust the vents cause I hate bending down.
This was not a post on the" best or only" way to adjust the vents.
Just something I found. And I thought I would share it with others, and that might give them some ideas.:)

I know the feeling. I don't like throwing stuff away, and it is a great pleasure every time to find use for all the different bits and pieces that is floating around in my garage.
