A CL SJ would cut down on the cost, and you can cook on it too!
edit to add, the concrete tree rings may be hard to find according to some comments.

Neat idea here. I would imagine going up a couple layers taller would make a nice platform for a "mini" wsm as well.
You would have to leave access for vent adjustment, but its nice not to have to cook so low to the ground. I also like
the guy from Spain's terra cotta idea.

Great retirement plan for an old SJ! Thanks for the link. As for cooking on it, do you think it would get enough air via the bottom vent?

If you are just using it as a grill with the top off that shouldn't be a problem. Also, if you leave spaces around the bottom, air will get in.

I checked out Home Depot last night, they have the 24" and 18" brick, but not the 14" I'm guessing the 18" might fit the Jumbo Joe, but I didn't do the math to be sure
