2006 Panasonic plasma RIP

In 2006 I bought a flat screen. For it's time it was fantastic and still had a fantastic picture.

All the hype about plasma burn in or wearing out never happened. This morning it simply would not turn on and had what sounded like a relay clicking.

16 1/2 years. Not bad.

The off angle viewing was fantastic so I'll need to see some in person and start researching.

I have a 50" Panny plasma from the same year hooked up in my basement. Still works great. We use it mostly during tornado warnings. The only thing that comes close in viewing angle and picture quality is OLED.

I had two...a bit newer. 2007 and 2009. The 2009 model was for our beach house when we first bought it. Got it because we loved the 2007 model so much. Sold the 2009 model about 6 months after we bought it because it had that glossy screen and the ambient light in that home was too much for the screen. What an amazing example of picture quality though.

Got 2 Samsung plasmas. Nothing comes close to viewing quality. They're amazing. Sadly due to a bad HDMI port the 50" was relegated to the living room, where the 43" had been, the 43" went down into the rec (should I say Wreck) room. Where if I can get to it it still performs beautifully. Bought those sets at Sam's Club well under $400 ea. Only regret is I did not buy more while I could. I have a top line UHD Samsung LED set 55" in fam rm now and while it produces an outstanding picture, it cannot hold a candle to the plasma sets

The good news is you'll get an even better TV for the fraction of the price you paid for your 2006 Plasma. But.... It's highly unlikely that whatever you buy will last as long as your Plasma did. Shopping for new TV's is my second favorite hobby, behind BBQ-ing

Your savings in electricity will pay for the new TV. My 50" Panasonic plasma draws 500 watts while my 70" LCD only uses 90 watts. While the new TV looks very good, there is something about the plasma that makes you go "wow".

I have a 42' 720p lcd LG from 2004. I did a cap job on it 10-15 years ago. It's still going; will not die.
Every time I goto Best Buy, I have a look (drool) at the newest models that are light years bigger & better for 1/3 the price.

I put a kill-a-watt on my plasma and it used about 300 to 350 watts.

According to specs, the one I'm looking at is uses 110 watts.

If I actually paid for electricity then maybe the cost savings would add up, however I don't really pay for electricity since I installed PV solar.

75” Samsung?

65" LG. A 75 won't fit the space.
When we moved into our current home 2.5 years ago I looked at TVs for the basement in which I wanted to setup my home theater gear. Had the space for almost any size. Already had a 65" in the beach house...and it's big. I looked at 75" and 85"...I settled on a 75" TCL Six series Roku after some research..
I was a bit surprised as to how big it actually was once setup. It's huge from a 10-12' viewing distance. In hindsight, a 65" would have worked just fine too. A 5 1/2' screen in most homes is pretty darn good.

Are you going to take your Plasma in to have it looked at? It could be something as simple as a power supply (example, not a guess) and who knows you might get that bad boy running again for a minimal amount of money

My Samsung Plasma which is probably from 2006 only paid $600 for it a 55" is still working fine asked the wife if she wanted something bigger she said she was good. Picture is stll as good as the day we bought it. In the man cave I have a 4k projector on a 110" screen can't watch the 55" just to small for me. :)

I did a bit of web searching and I suspect the main power supply board has failed. I have not opened it up to look but there are posts on reddit and ifixit that describe current symptoms and likely repairs. Downside is new parts are not available. I found the power supply board used on eBay for $100 and a secondary power board also used on eBay for about $100. Feels like a rabbit hole.

I may take it apart and see if there is an obvious failure on a cap or a relay.

The main board looks pretty simple. It also looks like there are a few fuses, but if a fuse popped, then there is often a reason for it.

This pic is just from one on eBay, not my board.

Looks like a time bandit project.
