2005 Genesis Platinum C Restoration

I probably could have started off with a worse sample, so I don't think I had as much work to do as I've seen in some other threads.

Added a couple personal touches. I liked how other restorations had painted the kettle on the logo plate red so cleaned that up and painted and sprayed with high temp VHT Clear.

I don't know if it will help preserve the bottom metal plate at all, but I trimmed some pieces of Trex to fill in the recessed area in the bottom of the cabinet after painting all the plates with Massey Ferguson grey. As other had suggested, it really is a very close match to the factory Weber grey on the platinums. Maybe not really functional, but I like the look.

And since the knobs for the side burners are basically impossible to find, after I got a new 3 pack of knobs for the main burners, decided I hd nothing to lose by trying to see if I could trim off the stems and have that fit on the side burner control. Took a couple tries, but I was able to get it work well enough. It's a tighter fit, but it goes on.

Worst piece in my mind was the metal 'liner' for the stainless lid. It's pretty rusted out as you get to the back/hinge area so I cleaned it up as best as I could without damaging it further.

Either way, happy with how it turned out.

Looks like you have yourself one really nice Weber grill. :coolkettle:

On the shield, when it finally gets unworkable, I would just cut it out. Yes, your stainless hood will probably show some "bluing" but that is better than rusty metal in your food!

How did you make the bottom panel?
Did you cut out all the rust?
I sanded it down and spray painted it with rusty metal primer, then coated it with the Massey Ferguson paint. At some point it will probably rust through again, but that'll be years from now I hope. Will probably convert to an open cabinet if the rest of the grill is still good by then.

For sure. Not the kind of vitamins and "minerals" I'm looking for!

John, did you find the burner knob you were looking for?

By the way. You did a very nice job on that grill! Excellent work!

Thanks!

I did not, gave up and 'made' one by cutting down the stem of one the other knobs after I got three replacements for those.

If your side panels, and doors are still in good shape, you can always keep an eye out for a decent Silver C and steal the bottom wire rack out of it, to still keep the cabinet look without having to weld in the crossbars.

Looks good, glad to see another Platinum get an extension on life!

Yeah, that will be the plan B option moving forward. Almost went with the closet maid wire shelving route I think I saw someone else do, but the panel was in good enough shape to give it one last shot
