18 inch WSM lid rim rusting

The lids get porcelain applied after the rim is rolled, so sometimes the inside of the roll doesn't get coated.

I have one I have experimented with a fix on.

Wire brushed the inside of the roll as best as I could and then filled the roll with a rust converter. I let the sit on a level surface until it was completely dry and lightly wire brushed it again to get the excess dried converter out.

I taped around the lid just above the roll, and on the lip of the roll itself before filling the inside of the roll with high heat black silicone. With the tape in place, I could really squish the silicone down into the roll to be sure I was filling it completely.

Unfortunately, I haven't cooked on it or even had it outside since the fix, so I can't tell you how well it worked. Also, with it full of silicone, you can't tell if the inside of the roll is rusting yet or not.

I have a 1983 WSM. It had some rust sround the rim. I wire brushed it and painted inside the rim where the rust was. Iused black rustolium paint. That was a yesr ago.

Clean the lid around the roll, then fill with high temp silicone, no more water sitting inside rolled rim lid.
