18.5 WSM price question.

Well, I went back and tried to get a lower price but they wouldn't do it. They told me some story that prices are fixed by Weber and that for now they can not sell it for any less. I pointed it out to them that it was almost four years old and that they were selling it at its original price but that argument went nowhere. They also told me that they were not going to be selling that size anymore. They did have a new 22.5 on display but not an 18.5. Maybe that part is true.

Anyway, I ended up buying it anyway since these never come up for sale used around here and its probably as cheap as I will be able to find one.

I'm not too concerned about the thermometer since most of the threads I read about it says they are off by about 30 degrees. I have one I can stick in the vent hole. The heat sheild is not a biggie either since I can borrow an ash tray from either my 18.5" kettle or the 22.5 one and modify it to temperarily fit.

For a display model, its in excellent shape. Nothing is missing and it doesn't have any dents or scratches on it.

Anyway, now I can try my hand at smoking. What is everyone's recommendation for a novice's first cook?

You don't need a heat shield on the bottom. they didn't have them for years...

The bimetal thermometers in webers and tru-tels are all about the same. +/- 10 degress. Just used a thermometer in the cork in one of the top vent holes.

Use a digital probe snaked thru the vent into the meat to monitor that temp.

For a first smoke, go with a basic rib recipe. it may not seem fancy or as involved as what other veterans may be cooking, but 1) it will be every bit as tasty and 2) you don't want to be worried about this, that, and the other thing. beacuse if it doesn't come out right, it can be discouraging.
