16 quart dutch oven (31 lbs) on OTS?

does anyone have any experience of the weight limit on OTS grill? sears has a good deal on what I assume is an IMMENSE dutch oven (16 quart) that is cast iron and weighs 31 pounds, do you think this is too much weight ( assuming its full). Its 16 inches round and 6.5 inches high, would it interfere with the lid?

Thanks

That's a pretty big load, put a 5 pound roast some veggies and broth and you're going to be pushing 40 pounds. I remember this came up a while ago, but I can't find it. Give Weber a call and see what they say the weight limit is.

Got a sears link --- this would be great for chili even if it was on the stove. :)
That's a 4 gallon dutch oven. You even sure it would fit in a kettle? Even "in the basement" might be questionable.

Yeah that's why I posted the dimensions, at 16 round and 6.5 high I'm not sure if the dome fits or not. I'm guessing it would be ok but the weight is a concern. If it was filled with water you are looking around 45 pounds.
That was a typo it should be 65lbs

Ha, I was star-struck by a 4 gallon CI dutch the measurement part didn't sink in. I have a 'beater' OTS with questionable grill straps (rusted to crap) and I was willing to take one for the team. My weight set wasn't far away and a 35lb plate is pretty close to 16" in diameter. From there, I stacked up weights until I got to 6.25" at the outside edge plus another 1/2" or so in the center. Overall, it was 130 pounds of weight on a crappy grill with a crappy grate and all held just fine. Granted there was some sag in the grate but come on - 130 pounds? lol And the lid fit without bottoming out on the weights.

Great test. Thanks!

I have a big cast iron skillet that I got from Cabelas. As a skillet, its wide and flat. The bottom is 22 inches across, and it is about 2.5 high. I think it is right about 16 quarts.

I thought it would be more useful than it turned out to be. Now it just takes up space in my garage.

I think the grill holds it ok, but I limit its use to My Performer, which is a shame since I cannot put the lid on the Performer, as the handles on the skillet make it wider than 22.5".

It fits better on my 26er, but I worry about the weight. The leg flanges are already weakening. It seems the leg flanges are the same on the 22.25 and the 26.75, but they fail more often on the 26.75 because of the additional weight, which has got to be less than about 10 pounds.

Chad, there's no charcoal in your pic. I suggest that the stress points on the grill, namely the welds on the leg flanges, may be more susceptible to failing under less weight if they are heated to 500 degrees.

True, but 500 degrees isn't enough to worry about in regards to steel. I highly doubt anyone would heat to 500 degrees AND stack 130 pounds on their kettle. I'd be more worried about the cooking grate than the support straps/leg sockets. But, this thread was about a 31 pound dutch oven which might be 65 pounds fully loaded. That, I'd use on any of my kettles at any charcoal temperature after seeing the 130 lb test on a beat-up & rusty kettle.
