14.5 WSM for traditional grilling?

The 14.5 WSM looks like a sophisticated Smokey Joe mini smoker.

BUT can you remove that center piece and use this smoker like a traditional grill, a la the Smokey Joe mini smoker build?

Thank you.

You can but due to the way they are designed the top and bottom do not mate. I recommend installing the BBQ grill adapter or something similar so the lid does not fall off.

It's pretty easy to make your own , too, I just got some aluminum stock at HD and made several sets for myself and a few friends from the forum.

For the $10 bucks plus freight for the kit, or the price of the material and time to fabricate these brackets, seems like it would be just as easy
to buy a used SJ. They are out there all over for 10 or 15 bucks. Just a thought.....

So, the lid of a plain old Smokey Joe will fit over the grate and kettle of the 14.5 WSM thus allowing for regular grilling like steaks and hamburgers etc.?

I would guess so. Just like a lid from a JJ or SJP or a 18.5" kettle will fit on the same sized WSM, same with the 22.5"
Placing the lid from the stock item is not perfect, but is really not that hard for grilling if you don't want to add any mods.
