Jamie,

I was wondering what your interests and hobbies are when you are not hard at work grilling and barbecuing. Do you have some other food related passions? Or do you like doing something that none of us would guess?

Jim,
I believe that food can provide a fascinating window onto cultures. The story of barbecue in America reveals a lot about our own history and regional differences/similarities. Last year Bon Appetit magazine sent me to Seoul, South Korea, to research Korean barbecue and its cultural underpinnings. That trip sparked a wider interest in Korean food generally and Korean culture. Lately I've been reading a lot about Korean history (just finished a great book called "The Coldest Winter," about the Korean War) and I've been eating Korean food wherever I can get it. I've even give taekwondo a try. By the way, my article for Bon Appetit will be in the July "grilling" issue. Thanks for your question.
Jamie
