Inside fire box

I have a really rookie question. I am rebuilding/restoring an older 1000. I have it all taken apart and am going threw the amazingly slow process of cleaning before i repaint and put back together. My question is...was the inside of the firebox originally black or was it bare? I have been scrapping and scrubbing to get what I thought was baked on grease off and was just curious if it was the original coating. I know not to paint the inside when done.

I don't think they're painted inside.

Plus you do not want to paint the inside where the burnt paint will transfer to the food.

It was bare aluminum like the new ones.

No prob. I had mine media blasted clean which took it back to the bare aluminum. After the first few cooks it has already developed a nice seasoning coating.
