Stoker has IP address, can't log into it? (Apple hardware)

I just sent my Stoker back for firmware update, and now I can't seem to get it back onto my network correctly.

I am running a full Mac setup (Airport extreme base station, Airport Express at the Stoker). I have the Airport Express on the network (green light) and can see with the Airport Utility. I have the Stoker connected to the Airport Express with Ethernet cable, and am receiving an IP address. My problem is that when I enter that address into my browser from a computer on that same wireless network, it never goes to the Stoker to allow me to control the unit etc...

Help? My ultimate goal here is to get back online, and also re-enable the twitter functionality that I loved so much before that got broken.

10.0.1.1 for the Airport Extreme base station, 10.0.1.25 for the airport express, and 10.0.1.36 for the Stoker

And your computer is 10.0.1.100 or some such?

You have the Airport Express in bridge mode? And you can ping the Express at the .25 address? Can you ping the .36 address?

Computer is .11

Airport is in "Participate in a WDS Network" mode, and the Airport Extreme is also in same mode, but as the base. Not sure if WDS is equivalent to bridge mode.

Go to the Internet panel in Airport Utility (not Airport), and tell me what the various settings are. I think you need the "Connection Sharing" pop-up to be set to "Off (Bridge Mode)".

WDS links the airports together via Wifi, but you still need to bridge in the ethernet port on the Express.

Wish I could post pics here, I'd take a screen capture. It currently has "Off (Bridge Mode)" as it's Connection Sharing setting.

That is correct. Can you try to ping each of those addresses? Either use the command line or the Ping page in Network Utility.app

100% Packet loss on all addresses. Doesn't seem possible given I'm connected to the Airport Extreme.

Weird?

Yeah, there's something basic wrong. I assume you meant zero packets going to the Express and the Stoker, but your router (Extreme) is fine.

Can you connect to the Express using the Airport Utility? Without connecting to it's ethernet port?

Here's what I get for each address I ping (Airport Extreme, Airport Express, and Stoker):
Ping has started…

PING 010.000.001.025 (8.0.1.21): 56 data bytes
Request timeout for icmp_seq 0
Request timeout for icmp_seq 1
Request timeout for icmp_seq 2
Request timeout for icmp_seq 3
Request timeout for icmp_seq 4
Request timeout for icmp_seq 5
Request timeout for icmp_seq 6
Request timeout for icmp_seq 7
Request timeout for icmp_seq 8

--- 010.000.001.025 ping statistics ---
10 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100.0% packet loss

Surprising given that I'm connected wirelessly to the Airport Extreme on the computer I'm doing the ping from (laptop).

I can connect to either the Airport Extreme or the Airport Express with the Airport Utility, with no problems.

I see at least one of your problems. See this line?

PING 010.000.001.025 (8.0.1.21)

It's misinterpreting the address you put in because of the leading zeros. In old unix parlance, a number with a leading zero was interpreted as octal (base 8), which is why it's actually trying to ping 8.0.1.21 (base 10). Get rid of the leading zeros:

ping 10.0.1.25

**** you're good. Here are results for Stoker (others are similarly good):

Ping has started…

PING 10.0.1.36 (10.0.1.36): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 10.0.1.36: icmp_seq=0 ttl=255 time=7.335 ms
64 bytes from 10.0.1.36: icmp_seq=1 ttl=255 time=4.388 ms
64 bytes from 10.0.1.36: icmp_seq=2 ttl=255 time=2.323 ms
64 bytes from 10.0.1.36: icmp_seq=3 ttl=255 time=6.011 ms
64 bytes from 10.0.1.36: icmp_seq=4 ttl=255 time=8.244 ms
64 bytes from 10.0.1.36: icmp_seq=5 ttl=255 time=5.544 ms
64 bytes from 10.0.1.36: icmp_seq=6 ttl=255 time=7.275 ms
64 bytes from 10.0.1.36: icmp_seq=7 ttl=255 time=7.383 ms
64 bytes from 10.0.1.36: icmp_seq=8 ttl=255 time=5.475 ms
64 bytes from 10.0.1.36: icmp_seq=9 ttl=255 time=5.582 ms

--- 10.0.1.36 ping statistics ---
10 packets transmitted, 10 packets received, 0.0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 2.323/5.956/8.244/1.647 ms

Ok, so now what happens when you enter the URL in your browser?

http://10.0.1.36/

I retired from Apple a little over 3 years ago. I spend many years in the enterprise tech support group (OS level stuff).

Well I'll be dipped.

I get exactly what I'm looking for. I had been entering the full address (extra zero's) but I have always done that, and it used to work.

How are you at getting access from outside the network?

Haven't really tried yet. I'm retired, so I never need to do that.

To access the Stoker from outside your network, you need to go to the "Port Mapping" tab of the "Advanced" page in Airport Utility. Click the plus sign at the bottom to add a port map. Pick "Personal Web Sharing". Put in 8088 (or some other number > 1024 that you'll remember in the "Public TCP Port" field. Put 10.0.1.36 in the "Private IP Address" field. Put 80 in the "Private TCP Port" field. Save all that.

Now, you just need to know the Public IP address of your Airport Extreme. That's on the bottom of the Summary tab of the Airport page. If it says "192.168.111.117", then you connect to the Stoker at http://192.168.111.117:8088 from outside your network.
