I am looking at a DigiQ from BBQ Guru. It seems like alot of $ for what it is. I don't mind spending the money but how useful is it really? To those who own one do you find it really helps alot with your cooks or are you cooking just as well with a WSM and no ATC? I would like to get one but...

I was looking for a more portable option . something more like a smokey joe without purchasing one for things like tailgating.

I made some tabs to hold the lid on so I can use my WSM as a grill. I tried it last night and could only get 350* at the lid with it. I used about 40 briquettes. I thought I would be able to get to 500* + no problem being this close to the fire. Any thoughts? Here is a pic.
The ABTs sound just like what I was looking for. How do you go about making them? How long on the smoker?

I have some pkgs of smoked sausages I would like to cook on my WSM. They are about the size of hot dogs. How long should I cook them? What kind of wood should I use? How many briquettes?? I am guessing maybe a half of a chimney of briquettes some hickory and cook for about a hour does this...
Homebrewer here. I mostly like IPAs, Pale Ales, And American Wheat beers. For Store bought I usually go for a Capital Island Wheat, Goose Island IPA, or some Summit Pale Ale.
