Starting over. What do I want ?

An old Forum member build me a SMD variant HeaterMeter 4.2.4 with a Pi B+ in 2016. I had frequent wifi and power supply issues (I often just reeled out a 100' Ethernet cable), and finally it died completely after the second year. He fixed it by replacing the processor and it's been working...

    Which thermocouple

My 2016 thermocouple has been fine till yesterday when it spontaneously began giving readings 50 to 100 degrees low. Realizing that there are no bargains, I thought I'd order a Thermoworks thermocouple, but it's $51 vs all the options for unknown Chinese stuff under $20. Advice? Thanks ! Karl

    HM dying

Having had longstanding WiFi issues with my HM and RPi B+, this morning I sat down to reload the latest software and try afresh to get WiFi going. I'm really tired of reeling out my 100' Ethernet cable... Software load went fine and initially it booted and communicated - registering itself...

Can't see my HM on the HeaterMeter Devices page

I've had WiFi issues and am currently just running a 100-foot ethernet cable out to the smoker. In working through the issues I decided to reflash and reinstall everything the other day. ALl worked well except still no Wifi, but now today I can't see my device on the HeaterMeter Devices page...

    Connectivity interruptions

My HM has run for weeks continuously on my desk, a couple of feet from the WiFi gateway, either with or without the Ethernet plugged in. But when I go to cook the HM itself keeps running fine, but I lose connectivity after maybe 8-12 hours. A power cycle reboot gets it back online, but often...

Can't get WiFi configuration right again

I had my WiFi working well, though I was never able to access the HM from outside my home network (I do have an external static IP and hostname through No-IP). Used an Edimax Nano as recommended in the Wiki. Last cook I had to keep rebooting to keep the connection going, so I bought a...

PID starting settings for 18" WSM

I've searched the Forum and haven't found any suggested starting settings for PID settings on an 18" WSM. About to try a first cook with my new HM and would like to make a good start. I can't wait to be able to check temps remotely and help the fire along in the cold Chicago weather - what a...

    Can't get enough heat

Thanksgiving turkey as my fourth cook with my 18" WSM, and I just can't get high enough temps. Full ring of Kingsford original, full chimney of lit on top. All vents open, and I've even been blowing into the lower vents with my fireplace bellows. First lit, I got a bit over 350 degrees, but...

Newbie question - How do I asssure that I have everything to build a HM quickly?

I'm new to barbecuing and have only done a couple of cooks, but it's enough (especially with winter coming here in the Chicago area) to know that I really don't love going outside every few minutes to play with dampers. The idea of a temperature control/blower sounds great, but I can't justify...

Hi from the west suburbs of Chicago

Been planning on buying a smoker for a while - and I've been debating about heat source, cheap vs exotic, and kept coming back to Weber. Then I found this site and my mind was made up. Ordering an 18" WSM in a few days - just want to be home when it arrives. I'll be combing the old threads...
