    Frontier Hardwood Lump?

Finally tried the stuff this past Saturday after having my wife grab 60 lbs. two weeks ago. Based upon this one cook, I have no complaints at all: good-size chunks, pleasant aroma, and easy enough to light. This lump burns VERY hot -- perhaps as hot as (or hotter than) Cowboy. It does NOT...

my cl weber finds what year are they

I expect that the date code information provided will be of little help for the black kettle, at least, other than establishing that the kettle was manufactured prior to 1979. Is the top vent stamped "Pat. 3538906"? That patent was issued on November 10, 1970. If the legs are secured to the...

    Frontier Hardwood Lump?

My wife called me a few minutes ago from Ocean State Job Lot to report that they have Frontier Hardwood Lump at $10 for a 20 lb. bag. She suspected, correctly, that I have not cooked over this brand before, and called to ask if I would like her to pick a few bags up for me. My goodness, I...

    2010 One Touch Platinum-feedback?

For what it's worth, I have four 22.5" lids of various vintages - 1970's, 1991, 1999, and 2006. I can perceive no difference in the weight of any of them, and I truly believe that the 2006 lid is as thick and sturdy as the 1970's lid.

    kettle

One other difference that is subtle (but for some tall people, critical): the grilling surface on the Performer is slightly higher than that of a One-touch.

US Patent No. 3,538,906, titled Barbecue Support Arrangement, was issued on November 10, 1970 and assigned to Weber-Stephen Products Co. The patent teaches a method to fit a kettle's legs into mounting sockets without need of thumbscrews. http://www.freepatentsonline.com/3538906.pdf The...

How hot is Renowned Mr. Brown?

I don't know if you could call it "hot", but I would say that it is very, very "peppery."

    Insulation?

Harry, as a New Englander, I am wondering if you ever have the need to insulate your pits. If so, do you use a product designed and marketed specifically for the WSM, or have you instead fashioned/improvised your own solution? Thanks for all of your guidance.

    What direction to go ??????

With respect to your first question, I suppose much depends on just what you mean by "tired." My Performer is 19 years old, and nowhere near ready for retirement. As to the second, I own a gas grill, and will replace it when the time comes. Can't be beat for convenience.

    My new 22.5" OTS

Chuck, congratulations on your first kettle. Your Genesis probably felt a chill when you wheeled the OTS out for that first cook. I noticed that the triangle at the base of your kettle is of the type found on the OTG, and not what has been standard issue on the OTS. It's certainly an...

    Craycort's Cast Iron Grate

I used my new CI grate for the first time a few hours ago to grill a pair of nice 1.25" strip steaks, together with some onions and green peppers. My initial reaction is as follows: Ohhh, MERCY! Get. This. Grate. I recognize that $100 (with shipping) is a heckuva lot to drop on a grill...

    which weber one touch?

Brady, as a practical matter, your plan to smoke the occasional turkey eliminates the 18.5" kettle as a viable option. Successfully cooking a turkey in a kettle requires the indirect method, which requires far more surface area. While you could probably cook a roasting chicken in an 18.5"...

    Recommendations re: Grill Gloves/Mitts?

I need to get some new grill gloves/mitts, and am seeking the benefit of the community's collective experience. I am looking for something that would protect my forearms. I am not necessarily looking for something that will let me comfortably stick my hand into a jet's afterburner, but it...

When was Weber in Wood Dale IL?

Bill, if your kettle's legs are held into their sockets with thumbscrews, it was probably manufactured before November, 1970. If there are no holes in the leg sockets for thumbscrews, and your lid vent is stamped "Patent No. 3538906," your kettle was manufactured in the seventies.

    Red BBQ Kettle

Mr./Ms. Rudko - Congratulations on both the Bar-B-Q-Kettle and the new One-Touch. I don't know where you are located, but if you have any lingering regrets about the Bar-B-Q-Kettle, I might be willing to take it off your hands - maybe for a few bucks more than you paid (depending, of course...

    weber in germany

I believe that the "retro" Weber is a replica of the prototype that George Stephen fashioned from half of a metal harbor buoy back in the early fifties. I have seen a replica just like it up close and personal at the Weber Grill restaurant in Chicago. And I agree with Shaun - it would be a...
