    WSM Pre-Purchase Questions

If you just want one you can "LEARN" with, find a close out 14.5" at a Walmart and then decide on your appropriate "size" next year. You just might find the 14.5" is large enough for "your" particular needs. I could have gone that way if I had thought ahead.

    Wsm 14.5

Yep, really like my 14.5" for basic cooks. Almost..........that's "almost" wish I hadn't bought my 18.5" first (although I truly enjoyed doing the mods on it). For the time I'm going to own both, and cook on both, I think BOTH were a good buy. Although, I could have gotten away with just the...

Should Fish Be Smoked On A Separate Smoker?

Only a personal opinion,but................rainbow trout coated in cornmeal and flour and then fried in Crisco in a cast iron skillet just can't be beat! This is easily done while smoking some ribs. :)

    18.5" WSM charcoal grate

You can pick up one of these and lay it across your existing grate. Affix it to existing grate. $8.99 http://www.homedepot.com/p/Weber-Plated-Steel-Charcoal-Grate-for-18-1-2-in-Kettle-Grills-7440/100683984

    New Style Water Bowl

That is the "new" style water bowl that comes with the newer 18.5" WSM's. Personally, mine is in the garage on a shelf. I use a clay wrapped saucer wrapped in aluminum foil as a heat sink/diffuser. Easier cleanup and same (if not better) great tasting food. But to answer your question, it...

More therm teting on the 14.5"

Yes, I totally ignore my stock thermometer even though mine is actually quite accurate. If it didn't "look" nice, I would just remove it and plug the hole, lol.

Got my 14.5" for $70 and here are my mods.....

Yep, kinda like a hobby! :) Maybe if I can find another close out, I'll mod and try to sell it on Craigslist in the spring, lol.

Got my 14.5" for $70 and here are my mods.....

Yes, this is my mod from my 18.5" WSM I lowered the handles so: 1. I can set it on the bolts rather than flat on the ground when I clean out the ashes from base. 2. The handles are flush with the charcoal ring so I can place the grate directly on top for searing purposes. May do the same...

Got my 14.5" for $70 and here are my mods.....

I'm sure it would add stability because all three legs are pulling against each other. However, I did not over tighten them. As far as gaskets, I went here: http://bbqgaskets.com

Got my 14.5" for $70 and here are my mods.....

First thing was to drop the heat shield to the outside. I used these from Ace Hardware Drilled a 3/16" hole 3/8" from edge. (Went 120 degrees for the other two). I went 1 1/2" from bottom section. I removed the legs to drill 3/16" holes. I installed all three hooks and evened them out. I...

Couldn't pass up a deal, No Brainer 14.5" purchase at Wal-Mart

So..........did you bring it home?

Couldn't pass up a deal, No Brainer 14.5" purchase at Wal-Mart

Just got mine for $70+tax. Thought about waiting (it was still only marked down to $99), but talked the guy into discounting further. Figured that was good enough since it was the only one and anywhere else I checked wouldn't go below $99.

You may find (after waking up hour after hour to "possibly" check temps) that if you continue to do overnight cooks, you'll end up getting an ATC. I just got the cheapest "PartyQ" and now that I have my rechargeable battery issue solved, I love it. I even replace my grate probe on my remote...

    Newly Acquired 18.5" WSM

Steve, WELCOME!!! :) As far as a controller, unless you are doing some overnight cooks, it isn't necessary. Saying that, I do have the PartyQ and love it!!! (There's just something about not "having" to go out and check/adjust the temp).

    14.5 Water Pan Replacement

Look for an 11.5" clay saucer in the garden department at Lowe's or Home Depot. Then just double wrap in foil. If you can't find that size, get one slightly bigger and set it on the "bottom rack" holders. You can always set your bottom rack on top if you need it. That's what I do with my 18.5".

    PartyQ issue...........HELP!!!

Yep, glad you mentioned it. It looked like a good connection, but the plastic "holder" was spaced just a tad too far for the rechargeable nipple.

    PartyQ issue...........HELP!!!

Yep, why add an option and make your more expensive line obsolete? I've got a 6v/1amp adapter and am going to do the mod "just in case" I ever forget to recharge my batteries (or have another need for them). Actually, just want to tinker with something. :o

    PartyQ issue...........HELP!!!

PROBLEM SOLVED!!! Stretched the springs and didn't get anything UNTIL I manually manipulated the batteries and heard it start up and then die. Got out my dremel tool and opened up the + end to allow the battery to seat better. Now have full contact and smooth sailing. Never realized...
