Picked up a used 14" WSM. DO I need the internal heat shield?

The early models! 18.5” didn’t come with a heat shield, but it never concerned me as I cook on a concrete slab most of the time. I have a “heat” shield for it, a slightly reformed kettle ash pan that I place in the bottom of the ash bowl. Seems to deflect some of the heat and certainly makes ash...

    Charcoal grates vs cooking grates

Not chromed, so might make cleanup a little harder, probably not much harder than using cast iron grates.

Matte vs. Glossy Cast Iron Grates for the Q???

Jon- I’m in the same fix as you... I have been putting my pack of 3 GrillGrates on top of my existing rusty grates to cook with. Whole checking the GrillGrate home page, I noticed an insert for Q’s. Pricier than cast iron, but aluminum doesn’t rust!! For sure I would avoid the stainless version...

What concerns should I have for a used WSM?

The only thing that I’d do is a good long high heat cleanout burn for cleaning out the grates with a wire brush. Before the burn, would scrape out any heavy gunk that I found inside the unit, after that burnout, it should be good to go—-

    First InstantPot recipe in progress

Left over Costco chicken parts, water, veggies, little seasoning=chicken soup that sometimes gets some rice or noodles added. Ready in about 1 hour. Also hard-boiled eggs that peel, yogurt, and as a slow cooker. We got rid of the crock pot after using the Instant Pot a few times because of its...

Weber Q grills and comparing the Q3200 to the Q200

Great review!! I own a 300, a 320, and a 200. I can attest that the Q300’s get hotter faster, but the 200 is no slouch and works well in the rv. I have used a rack and foil and cooked indirect with the Q’s and had great results so far. Only complaint is that the grates on the 300 series(mine are...

    Completed the trifecta

Things I appreciate about my 14.5–the size, perfect for us two, but is able to step up to the plate if we have a couple of guests, the ability to transport easily because of its size, the small charcoal usage compared to my two bigger WSM’s, and best of all—I can clean the grate in the sink or...
