Enrico the DigiQ folks recommend the following as starting points. Closer the vent half way for smaller smokers or low and slow Close three quarter for cold smoking Wide open for quick start or high temp grilling I hope this helps.

I have the gas assist and really like it. As Bob says, I think it's one of the best features on the Performer. Oh, I use it for lighting my chimney too. Good luck and let us know how you make out

Went to Costco today and picked up a belly just under 12 pounds at $2.69/pound. Curing four pounds today with the rest in the freezer.

Let me complicate things for you. I have a Performer, (22" kettle), and the 18" WSM. The 18" WSM is the perfect size for us which is usually just my wife and I. If I'm smoking for larger groups, the 18" still handles it well. Now the hard part. I don't think the 18" is large enough for grilling...
