Proper grate for an 18" Bar-b-kettle?

Actually, I found this after just a little digging. For $35, I'll bite, although I'm sure that beefy stainless grate would last much longer. This will be an experiment/exercise for me on how to make the grate last longer. I'm just super lazy when it comes to cleaning up the grates on my kettles...

Proper grate for an 18" Bar-b-kettle?

Thanks for finding that. $70 isn't that bad a price given the custom nature, but $25 shipping kills the deal. I got the kettle for free, and put $30 of parts into it. The lady of the house would kill me for dropping another $100 on it. :(

Proper grate for an 18" Bar-b-kettle?

Well, they used it as an ashtray for who knows how long before kicking it to the curb. The dampers were rusted up pretty tight, but as you can see, despite the questionable life choices made on its behalf, it cleaned up pretty nice. The handles are white oak, ordered from Etsy...

Proper grate for an 18" Bar-b-kettle?

Actually, looking at the Age Guide (http://weberkettleclub.com/determine-age-of-old-grill/), this guy appears to have been made sometime between 1982 and 2000. I'll have to take a closer look at the lid damper to see if there's any kind of marking on it.

Proper grate for an 18" Bar-b-kettle?

I'm not 100% sure it's a "collectible" vintage. There don't seem to be any markings to indicate the age/year of manufacture, but based on the design, I suspect it's late 90s-ish? However, I totally understand that drilling through it is probably not a great (or grate?) idea. I have a couple...

Proper grate for an 18" Bar-b-kettle?

Thanks, Tim. I did try that, and I can see it would work, but the grate didn't seem too stable. I think I'm going to drill and mount some L brackets so the hold the grate right at the level of the indent. Or, just let it ride. I think this is going to replace my JJ (along with the Cajun Bandit...

Proper grate for an 18" Bar-b-kettle?

So, I picked this old 18" Bar-b-kettle out of a neighbor's trash last Fall. Finally had a chance to clean it up today. Replaced the dampers and got some nice wood handles from Etsy. Went to put in a hinged 18" grate I bought a while back for my Jumbo Joe and found that it slid right past the...

Butts on an 18" kettle of unknown vintage

Yeah, so far I just dumped the butts and scraped it down with a 1" putty knife. The bottom vents are there, but kind of stuck in place due to rusted hardware. The tabs are a bit mangled, but I think I'll be able to salvage the dampers themselves and just replace the hardware. While I didn't pay...

First time Turkey on the Rotisserie

The last couple Thanksgivings I've done a 12-14 pound bird on my rotisserie. In my experience, if you budget for 3 hours of cook time, i'll be done in 2. If you budget for 2, it'll still be 30-40 degrees short of done and need 3. Bottom-line: plan on a 3 hour cook. If it finishes sooner, it's...

Butts on an 18" kettle of unknown vintage

Someone on my street had put an 18" kettle out for trash pickup, so, of course, I stopped by to rescue it. On first inspection, it looks like this baby's seen more than its share of butts over the years: Thankfully, despite its most recent stint as an ashtray, most of it's in pretty good...

WTB: Performer charcoal bin (newer, tilt-out style)

Picked up a Performer missing the bin. I know they're available at a few online places, but they charge nearly as much to ship it as they do for the part itself. Would prefer a local pickup in the eastern PA, south Jersey or even northern Delaware area.

    Green Crate & Barrel Performer

I recently grabbed a green Crate & Barrel edition Performer off of Craigslist. It's in pretty good condition overall, but there are a few dings on the lid and a tiny bit of rust where the handle tabs are welded on. Has anyone found a good match for touch up paint in this color?

WTB: Lid bale & hardware for a Performer SS

I'm rehabbing a Performer SS for a friend and it seems the original lid bale is missing (I swear it was in there when I picked it up, but gone now). I know I can buy a new one for about $35 (plus shipping), but trying to keep costs down on this project and thought someone might have one they're...

    Redhead Performer SS restoration

I dug around for that, but apparently did not have the right search terms. Thanks much! Now I just need a couple nice weekend days to start pulling this thing apart.

    Redhead Performer SS restoration

So, I picked up a very fatigued, but salvageable (I think) Redhead Performer SS from the FB marketplace last year. It's been sitting in the shed, waiting for me to have the time to deal with it. I revisited it yesterday to assess the condition. There's the expected stuff, like two of the...

First Christmas Brisket, how to make it say "Christmas"?

Unfortunately, I checked the pantry and we seem to be all out of those. I'm proceeding with my usual method, although I inadvertently separated the point & flat while trimming away the fat seem in between them. This particular slab seemed to have a lot more fat than usual... probably removed...

First Christmas Brisket, how to make it say "Christmas"?

I've cooked more than a few briskets over the years and have an "un-recipe" (kosher salt, fresh ground pepper, granulated onion & garlic) that has become my go-to for any kind of beef. The thing is, I've never cooked a brisket for Christmas before and want to find some way to make it...

Anyone ever use wood only in their Weber?

When I was just starting to learn the art of BBQ and had a Char-Griller COS, I made a lot of mistakes. One of which was not understanding that the wood chunks should be used as flavor enhancers, not as the primary heat source. I ruined some quality meat and wasted a bunch of money. Since...

Can I cook 6 chickens on an 18" WSM?

Personally, I prefer vertical roasting, and to fit 6 yardbirds on there, you might need to go that route (depending on their size). I have a couple of these that came as a bonus when I bought something else (I forget what): Buying 6 of these may not make sense (unless you'll frequently be...

    Picnic: Skin off or on?

Yup, pulled pork. I'm liking Tim's suggestion re: cracklins, though. Might have to give that a try, if only to see my wife's reaction.
