Which Maverick ?
I have ET-732 and it has been awesome so far.
If I were to step up I would take a look at the Thermaworks offering....their Thermapen is the bee's knees.

Pricey, tho.
Nicely done !!
I think your diffuser suspension solution is the best option.
I like the idea of retaining the top, standard height grate position.
How did you arrive at - 4-1/4" for your mid grate elevation (height) ?
I wasn't too excited about punching an 1-1/4" diameter hole so I went with a different grommet that uses a smaller hole.

Agree with Terry....
1) Redwood has enough natural color, no need to stain.
In fact people stain lesser woods to look like redwood.
2) Use a clear urethane or spar varnish designed for boats/marine environment and it will provide the durability that you need.
My ,marks are almost identical to this.
1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 are close together and full open is a bit away, if you observe the damper blades while moving the handle.
Marking the ash ring like this is indispensable, IMO.....I use it all the time.
I wouldn't try the roll/unroll/roll thing....seems like they get locked up in the coil position.
I did some last night rolled, snipped off the bamboo skewers and then wrapped, then uncovered with sauce for the finish.
As the others have said, the 3-2-1 method is optimized for spares and needs...
If you are cool with monkeying around with threading cables through vents/ports go for it.
However, the slot is the most convenient and user-friendly solution.
If you're not comfortable with slotting, get a gasket kit and leave a small gap in the gasket where you want to run your cables.

The Weber 63028 is "smoker graduated".
The Tel Tru BQ100 is "grill graduated".
I have the 63028 on my 18.5 WSM and a BQ100 on my 22.5 OTG.
Also have a Maverick ET-732 and a Thermapen.
Pick of the litter is the Thermapen.
It is also the most expensive
On my 22.5 I get about 6 hours at around 225°F using full baskets, lit at opposite ends. I get kind of a "Minion Effect" doing this.
I light the coal in the baskets using 70% rubbing alcohol.
I'll have some coal left over that I recycle.
I don't think that the baskets (Weber sheet metal...
Yep, this is how I see it.
But different strokes for different folks.
Similar to the water/no water in the water pan controversy.
Do what works best for you.
I'll add this...
I'm a woodstove user...burn about two cords a season.
I want a clean burn and want my firewood seasoned and as bone...
I use a paver.
Lately though, using the kettle I light directly in the Weber sheet metal baskets....good routine.
Also, whether chimney or baskets, I've been using rubbing alcohol 70% for my lighter fluid....works well.
No newspaper smoke and fly ash.
$2.00 for a quart at Walton's Market.
I agree with the above poster....do not use hose clamps on propane/gas fittings.
If the actual Weber part is too expensive in your area, you may be able to find a generic replacement hose.
It may also be possible to have a hose "made up" at an industrial hose shop.
These shops make up...
